They walk past me quietly and the man looks at me with a friendly smile trying to conceal the fact that he was tightly squeezing Christina's arm. She doesn't smile at me as she is too busy trying to free her arm from his grip. For a moment I feel like she is looking for help because she seemed miserable when walking past me. They both turn to the other street before disappearing in the dark.
What did just happen? I am completely confused. What was that man doing to her? Is she in danger? A phone call from Jace scares my thoughts away.
"Are you in your room?" he asks.
I swallow. "No, not yet"
A quick pause follows my response. "Well, where are you?" he questions.
"Outside. I" I run out of words as I can't concentrate on our conversation.
"Is something wrong?" he sounds worried.
"No, I need to go" I tell him not knowing the reason for my awkwardness.
"Wait, where?" he raises his tone, worry clear in his voice. I immediately hang up, not giving him an answer.
What is happening? It's like I can't clear my thoughts. Was Christina about to get hurt? I decide to follow them despite the fact that they have been gone for some minutes. I check to see if the doors are locked because I can't remember doing so. I start walking rapidly straight forward. I reach the end of the street and try to decide which way they went. Do I walk left or right? I decide to walk left without a logical reason. The street is very silent and dark. I turn on the flashlight on my phone and continue walking. Jace keeps blowing up my phone, asking where I am. I choose to ignore them an concentrate on the road.
"Why isn't there a single car on the streets? For fuck's sake" I whisper to myself.
It's when I hear the same voices again, that I stop being paranoid. The groaning and crying comes from the other street, so I near myself to the entrance. I recognise them but stop before turning into the street. Christina is pushed to the wall of a building. The man is gripping her neck and trying to choke her. Her hands are on his arms, trying to push them down.
I am completely in shock. I realize that I was correct about Christina being in danger. Without a hesitation, I try to think of ways I can save her.
"I pay you, you slut!" I hear him say.
"So stop!" Christina has trouble breathing.
"What was that?" he asks to repeat.
I have to go there and save her before he chokes her to death. I turn into the street, taking loud steps so he hears me. The man turns his head to me and freezes.
"Let her go" I demand.
"You called one of your minions to save you?" he faces Christina. She is only able to shake her head as a response.
"Take you hands off her" I say this and take exactly three steps to get closer to him. Christina glances at me with the corner of her eye.
"And what if I don't?" he asks arrogantly.
"I guess you'll find out" I try to sound convincing. The man doesn't scare me at all because he doesn't seem tough to me.
"Kid, why don't you go back to wherever the fuck you came from. It is getting late, way past your bedtime" he says that while tightening his grip on Christina's throat.
"Impressive choice of words, man" I say and let out an evil laugh. "I am warning you for the very last time now, let her go" my hands form into a fist and my jaw clenches.
He turns his head to Christina and laughs at her. She is in misery, grasping for air. Deciding that I had enough of him, I kick him on his ribcages from the side and this makes him fall. A knife comes flying out of his pocket. Christina runs away from the wall and rushes to my side to stand behind me.
"Bitch" I hear him whisper angrily. A quick moment later, he manages to stand up and run against me, with his fist in the air, ready to punch me. He swings at me and I dodge his hit. I punch him under his chin and this makes him bleed out of his mouth. He steps back and wipes the blood off with his right hand.
"A potty mouth and a bleeder?" I sarcastically ask and chuckle.
Using my distraction as an opportunity, he manages to grip my neck and smash my back to the wall just like he did to Christina.
"Is this funny to you?" he asks while tightening his grip. It becomes harder to breath every second.
"Let her go, you idiot!" Christina is screaming with her shaky voice.
"Yeah man, let me go" I copy her words.
"Or what?" he questions.
"Or this" I say and kick him between his legs, causing his hands to automatically remove from my neck. He falls on the ground once again and tries to reach for the knife that was right next to him.
"Oh my God!" Christina screams looking at the man grabbing the knife.
He is moving towards me on the ground. Seconds later he stands up and continues to walk toward me. I hear Christina's heavy breathing behind me get faster every second.
"You aren't that tough now, are you?" he proudly asks.
I kick him in the stomach and he swipes the knife on my bare skin as a reflex. I groan loudly as I feel the blood rushing down my skin. I look up to see him standing still looking at me, waiting for me to strike again. I kick the knife out of his hand. The metal flies to the side and he runs away to grab it. I start running as well and soon tackle him to the ground before he can take it. He turns around only to see that I am now on top of him. I grab the collar of his shirt so I can lift his head up. I punch him in the face three times and let go after his nose starts to bleed. I stand up and kick him on the side out of anger.
"Enough!" Christina shouts. She comes closer and takes a look at him. The man is lying helpless on the ground while his mouth and nose are bleeding. "I'm calling the police" she says. "Are you alright?" she asks before taking out her phone.
"I'm fine. Are you?" I question.
"Yes" she quickly answers and dials 101. Christina hangs up the phone and faces me. "They are on their way" she informs me.
I nod and shut my eyes tightly. The more time passes, the worse my leg starts hurting.
"Oh my God. The bleeding won't stop" Christina panics.
"Relax. I can wait till the ambulance is here" I try to calm her down.
"What? No! We need to apply pressure on it before you bleed to death" she raises her voice and without a hesitation puts her right hand on the cut and her left hand above it, pushing down with pressure. The ambulance and police arrive and I call Jace.
"Where the fuck are you?" he curses angrily. "You won't reply to my texts and I'm literally looking for you on the streets right now" he states.
"I'm fine. Just come to the hospital, yeah?" I answer.
"Which one? Are you alright? What happened?" he runs out of breath.
"I'm alright" I assure him and let him know the hospital I will be brought to.
