SpainSebastian leant back in his armchair, his mind lost in thoughts about a certain daughter of an English Earl. JF sat across from his younger cousin, with his nose in a novel, having given up on conversing with the lovestruck prince.
The door to the drawing room opened and King Manuel and Queen Sofïa of Spain entered. JF clambered to his feet, giving Sebastian a nudge with his foot to get him out of his thoughts. Sebastian leapt to his feet and the two sunk into bows.
"Your Majesties," they muttered.
The king and queen did not appear to notice the cousins' presence and continued with their conversation from the hallway.
"We cannot call off the New Year's Eve Ball," King Manuel reminded. "It's been a tradition for many years."
"It's not that historic," Queen Sofïa snapped. "Your father was the one to implement it."
"That still counts as history, does it not?"
"I only agreed to that ball so we could announce Sebastian and Camila's engagement."
JF turned to look at Sebastian, who shrugged and took his flask out from his suit pocket. The prince's failed engagement to Lady Camila Alonso was the only subject discussed in the Palace for the past two months since its end.
"My dear, we always have the ball, whether there is an announcement or not," the king reminded. "I cannot call it off."
"Why not?" His wife replied. "Sebastian managed to call off his engagement."
JF exaggeratedly cleared his throat to alert Their Majesties to their presence.
"Ah, Juan Fernando, when did you arrive?" Manuel inquired.
"Since you entered the room, sir," JF replied, getting to his feet.
"I am sorry, I did not notice."
"We were too busy discussing your cousin's failed engagement," Sofïa informed as if the cousins had not overheard.
"If you'll excuse me, Your Majesties," Sebastian announced and left the room before receiving permission to withdraw.
JF made to follow his cousin, but his aunt called him back over.
"What is going on with Sebastian?" Sofïa demanded.
"I am sure he feels embarrassed about the end of his engagement with Lady Camila," JF shrugged.
"I highly doubt that; he was the one to call it off. And he gave us a pathetic excuse."
