December 25, 1929 England
The entire Crawley family gathered in the library at tea time. Violet, Isobel, Dickie, Robert, Cora, Rosamund, Mary, Henry, Edith, Bertie, Tom, Rose, Atticus, Sebastian, and Darrel. The children had just opened their gifts and then went outside with Nanny (who did not know about the midnight cookies) to play in the snow.
"It is so lovely having the whole family together again," Robert smiled. "I feel like a lucky man."
"Then you have not spent enough time with us, Papa," Mary smirked, causing Darrel and Edith to laugh.
"Mary, don't be like that on Christmas," Cora scolded.
Mary simply rolled her eyes and turned her attention to the gift Darrel had given her. She unwrapped the packaging to discover a book on different car models. Darrel burst out laughing as her older sister glared at her.
"This is cruel," Mary complained. "Why would you do this to me? And at Christmas?"
"Because I'm your younger sister and I do not spend enough time teasing you," Darrel shrugged.
"Yes, because you're almost eighteen and learning to run your country."
"Well, I am not sorry because it was a rather funny prank. However, that book is for Henry, and I did get you a real gift."
"Thank you. I knew you weren't completely evil."
"She's not you," Edith commented.
Darrel laughed while Sebastian attempted to suppress a grin. He was hesitant to spend Christmas at Downton because he wanted to be alone and still did not always feel welcome (because of Robert and Violet). However, he did enjoy seeing how happy Darrel was when she spent time with her family. His mind wandered to thinking about JF and him spending Christmas alone with his parents but was pulled out of his thoughts by Darrel handing him a gift.
"That one is from Cora and me," Robert announced.
"Thank you," Sebastian nodded.
Sebastian unwrapped his present, revealing a silver pocket watch and chain. He flipped it over to see an engraving of a coat of arms. Half of it was the coat of arms of Grantham and the other half was the crest of the Spanish Royal family.
"Papa, that's beautiful," Darrel gasped, looking over her fiancé's shoulder.
"Yes, thank you," Sebastian smiled, going to shake Robert and Cora's hands.
"I'm glad you like it," Cora replied.
"We wanted you to have something commemorating your relationship...that's not revolved around His Majesty's coat of arms," Robert explained.
