Two days later, Allen entered the servants' courtyard to find Thomas smoking.

"Good morning," Thomas nodded, offering him a cigarette.

"Thank you," Allen smiled.

"Does Lady Darrel know that you're not working?"

"I guarded her room last night, so I have the morning off."

"Lucky."

"And tired."

Thomas chuckled then sat down at the picnic table. He'd assembled the house's clocks and planned on fixing them.

"Need any help?" Allen offered, sitting across from him.

"You'd only slow me down," Thomas smirked.

"You don't know that. How do you know that fixing clocks is not one of my many specialities?"

"Because fixing clocks are not a requirement to protect the Royal Family."

"And how would you know that?"

The men grinned at each as the butler started his repairs. Allen watched in admiration for a few minutes then got to his feet as they heard the crunching of wheels on the drive. A car arrived at Downton Abbey.

"Are you expecting any guests?" Allen inquired.

"Not that I know of," Thomas shrugged. "Although old Lady Grantham visits when no one's invited her."

"I'm sensing that you don't like the Dowager Countess."

"I have nothing against her. But she irritates all the members of the family."

"I would assume that you would enjoy that."

"Hmm...perhaps I do like old Lady Grantham after all..."

Allen chuckled as they left the servants' courtyard and walked towards the front door.

Thomas and Allen approached the car that pulled up. The back door opened and Perseus Chadwick stepped out, with a grin on his face.

"Who is that?" Thomas asked.

"Your Grace!" Allen exclaimed, and bowed.

"Oh hello," Perseus nodded. "What are you doing here?"

"Wherever the Princess of Wales goes, I am there to keep her safe."

"How admirable. Excuse me."

Perseus nodded and knocked on the door. Thomas rolled his eyes, not thinking much of the Duke of Dulverton, then went to open the door for him.

"Thank you, chap," Perseus grinned, clapping the butler on the shoulder.

"You're welcome...Your Grace," Thomas replied, forcing himself to keep a smile.
