The following morning, Darrel and the others returned to London on the first train. She told David that she preferred to return sooner so it would be easier to unpack and settle back in at Buckingham Palace. Although the real reason was that she wanted to avoid Robert since she knew he would be glad at the prospect of Sebastian never returning to England.

Once they were back at Buckingham Palace, the Royal Butler, Wilson met them in the entrance hall.

"Good morning, Your Highnesses," Wilson bowed.

"Wilson," David nodded, giving the servant a sceptical look. Unless it was a formal occasion, the butler preferred to remain downstairs to order the others about rather than trudging upstairs to answer the door.

"Their Majesties wish to speak to both of you in the drawing room."

"Now?"

"Yes, sir."

"Very well. Have our cases brought up then."

"Yes, Your Highness."

Wilson bowed and began to bark orders at the footmen as the siblings headed upstairs to the drawing room.

"Do we have to speak with them now?" Darrel whispered. "I barely slept last night, and I cannot bear to hear them lecture us at the moment."

"It will be worse if you keep them waiting," David responded. "But do not worry; I am on your side and will defend you if necessary."

"Thank you."

The Princess of Wales and the Duke of York entered the drawing room to find their parents sitting by the window. They were in the middle of drinking coffee with an assortment of pastries laid out in front of them.

"Your Majesties," they greeted.

"There is a rumour going around London that Sebastian has left the country," Queen Mary of Teck announced.

David forced himself not to groan. He knew his mother never thought things through before speaking, but he did not want Darrel to start crying again. He spoke to Sydney that morning who informed the Duke that Darrel had spent most of the previous night weeping.

"He has," David informed, sparing his sister from answering.

"Why? Where does he have to go?" Queen Mary demanded.

"He returned to Spain with his cousin."

"Is he not banned from that country? Or did I miss something?"

"You did not. But a messenger arrived from Spain; King Manuel is severely ill, and when Sebastian heard, he insisted on seeing his father...possibly for the last time."
