A few days later, Carl Jones marched into William's office, full of rage.
"Turner, explain yourself!" Jones ordered. "What is this?"
"What do you mean, sir?" William responded.
"The interview with Her Highness."
"Hundreds of copies sold, sir. It is one of our best articles."
"I asked you to get me an interesting story. One that would spark discussion."
"I believe this will spark discussion...sir."
"You are sailing very close to the window, Turner. You know this is not the type of article I asked for."
"But..."
Jones cut him off by holding up his hand as he began to read from the article, "Today I had the pleasure of meeting one of the kindest people in the world. To my surprise, it was Her Royal Highness, the Princess of Wales."
"What is your point, sir?" William sighed.
"Give me one reason why I should not sack you on the spot."
William bit down on his bottom lip, as his mind raced to think of a good excuse.
"What if I get Her Highness to agree to speak with me regularly?" He offered.
"And why should she agree?" Jones scoffed.
"I wrote a kind article...she may trust me now. Imagine if our paper is always the first to know of important events. And one day when she becomes queen..."
"I understand your point, Turner. Very well, I accept your offer. However, if Her Highness refuses, you won't have a job."
"Yes, sir."
Jones gave William a final glare and then stormed out.
Meanwhile, Darrel entered King George V's study after being summoned.
"Your Majesty," Darrel curtsied.
"Good morning, Elizabeth. Sit," he ordered.
Darrel nodded and took a seat across from the king.
"Did you read Turner's article?" George V inquired.
"Yes, sir," Darrel replied.
"You did a fine job. He said many respectable things."
"Thank you, sir."
"What did you tell him?"
"Sir?"
"More to the point: you did not tell him what I told you to."
Darrel shook her head, avoiding His Majesty's looks of disapproval. He got to his feet and began to pace around the study.
