Much to her chagrin, when Darrel entered the dining room, she found that she was seated next to the Duke of Crowborough. She made a plan to ignore him for the entirety of the meal.

"My dear friends, if I could say a few words," Chadwick announced, as he got to his feet. "It is an absolute pleasure to have you here tonight. While I have known some of you for quite a few years, there are others whom I am happy to be able to spend time with. I've seen many of you over the years at social events, and I could tell that you were the type of people I would want to be friends with."

"That is an insult," Sebastian whispered to David.

"Shh..." David ordered.

"Although what I find so astonishing about the group here tonight is that it turns out you all have something in common. From our conversations in the drawing room, I realized that you are all lucky enough to know Elizabeth personally," Perseus continued.

"What is he playing at?" David hissed, "What is he talking about?"

"Lady Mary courted all the men in this room," Sebastian explained. "Apart from Chadwick."

"What the devil is this about?"

Sebastian shrugged as the Duke of Dulverton finished his toast, and everyone raised their glasses, and then dinner began. Unlike traditional dinners, there were no rules for the conversation flow, so the host began to address the table.

"I find it fascinating that you were all able to meet Elizabeth before she was the Princess of Wales," Chadwick smiled. "It must be quite a brag."

"Not really," Sir Richard shrugged. "When I met Her Highness, she was only five years old."

"Yes, well I heard you spent quite some time at Downton, Sir Richard. You were engaged to Lady Mary, weren't you?"

"Yes, that is accurate."

"You and Mary were engaged?" Tony inquired.

"For almost two years."

"Why did it end?" Philip asked.

Sir Richard glanced over at Darrel, who gave him a subtle look of warning, which he understood right away. Besides, he knew there was no point getting on the wrong side of the Princess of Wales to gossip about a now-married woman with two children.

"There were several reasons," Sir Richard shrugged.

"How detailed," Chadwick laughed.

"Relationships are complicated, Duke," Darrel explained, hoping to steer the conversation away from Mary's past.

"Yes, I agree. I have always had trouble in that area."

"Because you are an arrogant sod," Sebastian muttered, earning himself a kick from David.
