One evening, Darrel was in Buckingham Palace's library, going through files that she'd been given. Since her argument with Robert almost a month ago, Darrel had barely slept, even after forgiving Sebastian. So she worked in the evening until she got tired enough to fall asleep without thinking about her disownment. The door to the library opened and Francis stepped in.
"Your Highness," Francis bowed.
"Good evening, Francis," Darrel nodded.
"I have a message from His Majesty; he wants to speak to you in his study."
Darrel let out a sigh. She was not in the mood to listen to another lecture. It was hard enough when she was awake, but it was far too late to defend whatever she'd done wrong this time.
"Thank you," Darrel smiled, getting to her feet.
"Your Highness."
The footman bowed once more as Darrel left the library.
The Princess of Wales took a deep breath as she stood in front of the king's study. Her mind was racing, trying to figure out what she had done, but she was not entirely sure. Darrel raised her hand and knocked.
"Come in!" The king called.
Darrel entered the study and found King George V sitting at his desk, pouring over documents.
"Good evening, Your Majesty," Darrel curtsied.
"Thank you for coming, Elizabeth," he replied. "Please, take a seat."
Darrel sat down in an armchair across from the desk. To her surprise, the king took out a bottle of scotch and poured two glasses. He slid one across to her.
"Cheers," he nodded, raising his glass.
Darrel forced a weak smile as she took a sip of her drink.
"Now, let us talk," George V announced.
"What about, sir?" Darrel inquired.
"I am worried about you. It has been a month since your argument with Lord Grantham, and quite a few weeks since the incident with the Duke of Dulverton. Now, I respected your space and did not insist that you return from Windsor Castle. However, at some point, you must move on."
"With all due respect, sir, I believe I am doing my best to move on. I returned to Buckingham Palace after two weeks."
"You came back for Sebastian, and have not left the premises since."
"I went to lunch with the others, sir."
"Elizabeth, I am not trying to make you feel bad. I am concerned about you."
