Later that day, Darrel sat in front of her dressing table as Lily did her hair. The lady's maid could sense that there was something on the princess' mind. They usually had a conversation but Darrel did not speak apart from the formalities.

The door opened and David walked in. Seeing his reflection in the mirror, Lily turned around and bobbed a curtsey.

      "Your Highness," Lily greeted.

"Where's Sebastian?" David asked his sister, ignoring the maid.

"He's not feeling well," Darrel replied. "I told him that he did not need to attend the ball."

"Well, I'm glad to see that you have a lie prepared for our guests. But as your brother, as well as someone who lives at Buckingham Palace..."

"David, I need to be downstairs in a few minutes and I do not have time to listen to a lecture."

      "Where is Sebastian?"

Darrel ignored the question and returned to watching Lily work in the mirror. The maid placed the tiara on the birthday girl's head and then stepped away.

"There," Lily nodded. "Is that alright ma'am?"

"Yes, thank you, Lily," Darrel said, forcing a smile.

"Is there anything else you need, ma'am?"

      "No, that will be all."

      "Your Highnesses."

Lily curtsied, gathered the clothes that needed washing and left the bedroom. Once the door closed, David sat down on the couch and crossed his arms over his chest.

      "Where's Sebastian?" David repeated.

Darrel let out a heavy sigh, "I don't know."

      "How can you not know?"

"Because he's my fiancé, not my dog."

"If he is not ill, why is he not coming?"

"Because you invited JF and Camila to the Palace."

Darrel got to her feet, pulled on her gloves and moved a stray hair out of the way.

"What happened?" David inquired, changing his expression from annoyed to sympathetic.

"When I spoke to Sebastian this morning, he told me that he cannot be in the same room as his cousin. Then he left," Darrel shrugged.

      "He left?"
