The following morning, Darrel decided to go for a ride before breakfast. She had spent the previous evening lying awake in bed wondering what to do. While it was clear that she did not want to break off her engagement with Sebastian, she had to admit that Robert had made a few valid arguments. Also, she was unsure of how to tell Sebastian about the conversation with her father. Darrel always wanted to be honest with her fiancé, but the last thing she wanted to do was make him feel worse about how he'd treated her a few months ago. She also did not want Sebastian to feel the need to confront Lord Grantham about the accusations he had made the previous night. Even though Darrel had a feeling she would no longer bring Sebastian with her to Downton, she did not wish for Sebastian to do something he would later regret, and get himself banned from visiting the estate.
Darrel galloped through the Downton grounds, followed by a handful of guards, who were grumbling about how early it was to ride this quickly. She almost did not notice the other early rider in front of her, but at the last moment, she managed to pull her horse to a halt.
"I appreciate that you did not knock me off my horse," came a familiar chuckle.
Darrel looked up from her horse to see Paul Ringer in front of her, dressed in his riding gear and with his usual smirk.
"Sorry," Darrel responded. "I was distracted and was not looking where I was going."
"No worries," Paul nodded. "I am glad that you did not run into me, as I am sure your guards would find a way to blame me for the incident."
"Most likely."
"What are you doing on a ride so early in the morning? I never thought you were the type of person to ride before breakfast."
"Normally, I am not. However, I had some things to think about, and I preferred to do so on my own."
"Did you argue with Sebastian?"
"No," Darrel replied. "How do you even know that Sebastian was at Downton?"
"I ran into him and a few others at the pub the other day," Paul shrugged.
"I am surprised that you are still intact."
"Well, the Prince of Spain wished to make me pay for what I have done to Sebastian. However, he managed to calm him down."
"Heavens, I never thought Sebastian would be the one to convince JF not to fight somebody. It is normally the other way around."
"In all fairness, Sebastian told His Highness not to fight me for your sake."
"Ah..."
Darrel smiled since Paul's information proved to her that Sebastian had changed, and she did not have to worry about him. A few years ago, her fiancé would take any opportunity to fight Paul, either physically or verbally. However, not only had he appeared to move on from their disagreements, he kept his older cousin from fighting his battle.
