Darrel returned to Downton and headed to the stables to ensure that Diamond was comfortable in his stall. While her guards always assured her that they would be able to take care of the horses, she insisted on doing it. When she was in London she never had the chance to do much, so when she was back at Downton Abbey she appreciated the opportunity.

"Your Highness," the head groom, Lynch bowed. "I apologize for not being here earlier; I was unaware you would be riding this early."

"Do not worry, Mr Lynch," Darrel assured with a kind smile. "It was a last-minute decision, there was no reason that you would have known. Would you please ensure that the horses are properly settled?"

"Of course, ma'am."

"Thank you."

"Well, that is his job, isn't it?" Benjamin muttered to Sydney as the princess bid the groom a good day and then headed back towards the house.

"Don't be an ass," Sydney snapped.

Once Darrel returned, she found JF, Sebastian, Camila, and David in the library. While they were invited to spend time with the Crawley family, they preferred to stay to themselves, especially when Darrel was not around. When the Princess of Wales entered, everyone got to their feet.

"You all know by now that these formalities are not required," Darrel smirked. "Especially when nobody else is around."

"I hope you never say that in front of Their Majesties," David warned.

"Do not worry, I do not enjoy listening to their endless lectures."

David laughed, then got back to reading the newspaper.

"Are you all right?" Sebastian asked softly, going over to his fiancée. "You were not at breakfast, and I started to worry about you."

"Everything is fine," Darrel nodded. "I fancied an early morning ride."

"You should have told me; I would have come with you."

"Well, it was quite early, and I did not want to wake you."

"It is never too early to go on a ride with you."

JF rolled his eyes at his cousin's sweet offer, causing Camila to elbow him in the ribs. Even if the Prince of Spain was not a romantic, she did not want him to stop the former one from being one. David saw the gesture and could not help but chuckle, which he managed to turn into a cough once JF glared at him.

"Is there something you would like to say, Edward?" JF demanded, using his friend's formal name to irritate him.

David was saved from having to reply by the door opening and Thomas stepping in.
