Prologue

"Where the hell are you, Engineer?"

I grunted as I wore my stilettos. I opened the driver's door and threw my bag on the passenger seat before I swiftly climbed in my car.

"Anong oras na Step, sigurado bang aabot ka? This is your biggest project so far. You can't just squander this one in a million opportunity just because you fuck up!"

Pumikit ako nang mariin. Ramdam na ramdam ko ang sunod-sunod at malalakas na pagpitik ng mga ugat sa sentido ko sabay ang malakas na pintig ng puso ko.

"Aabot ako!" I shouted in panic before I ended the call.

I muttered a curse as I hastily turned my car in the driveway.

I badly wanted to hurt myself for drinking last night. Ngayon ay saan ka dinala ng pagiging lasinggera mo, Step?

"Goddamn it!"

Infuriatingly, I have to slow down and wait for a gap in the traffic when I reached the main road. I maintained my pace until the road get cleared. I pressed my foot on the gas and I blasted forward. I groaned when it resulted to slamming my back to my seat.

Naisip ko na ang pinakamasamang mangyayari sa akin kapag hindi ako nakarating sa tamang oras sa groundbreaking ceremony ng proyektong ako mismo ang may hawak. That is a big project and I can't just fuck up.

I moved the gear and floored it. I glanced at the speedometer and gritted my teeth as it stirred up to eighty miles per hour.

Hindi ko akalain na mawawalan na ako ng pakealam sa sariling buhay. I don't even give a damn if I get stopped by the cops. Was it the adrenaline? The excitement? The thrill?

Dahil pagkalipas ng ilang taon ay saka ko lang muling naramdaman ang lahat ng nabanggit. And my mind only led me to him.

Tang ina.

I hit the gas pedal and hit ninety. I have overtaken the other cars. My clutch on the steering wheel was so tight that I could see the colors of my knuckles turning into white.

Makakaalis na sana ako sa traffic kung hindi lang sa isang sasakyan na katulad ko ay mukhang nakikipagpaligsahan din sa ibang sasakyan. I have to slam the break pedal and my head almost hit the steering wheel if not for my seatbelt. As I lifted my head, the light turned into red.

"Damn it."

After waiting for the longest red light I've ever have, I weaved between the lines of traffic. Kaagad kong nahanap ang sasakyan na sumingit sa aking unahan kanina. Hindi mahirap hanapin ang sasakyang tinutukoy ko lalo pa't ito lang ang natatanging mustang sa daan ngayon.

Pasikat.

I floored the gas and tried to catch up with the mustang. I was about to roll my window down to show the driver of that mustang my middle finger before I outpace him when a car across from the mustang has overtaken to my lane. I have to turn my car to the right to save myself from death in exchange of scraping my car against his showy and shiny mustang.

I muttered curses when I heard continuous honks of a horn behind. Instead of pulling my car over, I step on the gas and hit one hundred. I glanced in my rearview mirror and my heart skipped a bit when I noticed that the mustang was tailing me.

Wala na ako sa siyudad nang mawala sa likuran ko ang humahabol sa'kin. It's really not my intention to bump his car with mine. At kung hindi lang ako nagmamadali ay maaaring itinigil ko na ang sasakyan ko para humingi ng dispensa at makipag-areglo.

I was ten minutes early when I reached my location.

I still have time to check myself in the rearview mirror. I looked tired and haggard so I applied a little powder to fix my makeup and retied my long hair in a high and tight ponytail. I took a quick glance at my pastel pink two-piece suit before I opened the driver's door.
