Sixty-Binary Pairs

The green foliage brushes against my shoulder as I peer up at the blooming red flowers. They contrast against the dark black of the sky.

"Woah." I breathe out, walking down the passage and letting my fingertips trail against the velvet leaves. I see a tall figure standing on the balcony, with their hands in their pockets.

"Rhys?" I ask gently and the figure turns around, showing that it was indeed Rhys.

"Hi princess." He mutters, sticking his hands back in his pockets as I walk up to him. His eyes scan over the stars as I try to break the silence,

"You ironed your shirt wrong." I point out the creases that I had noticed during the wedding. Rhys looks down at his shirt,

"Huh. That's probably why I found some pieces of black satin on the iron." My eyes widen as I use my palm to bat him on the arm,

"You burnt your shirt!" Rhys freezes and smiles at me sheepishly,

"You can do that?" He asks, looking up at the stars again.

"Did you know that many stars come in pairs?" He blurts out, causing me to look at him in astonishment,

"Really?"

"Yup, I think they're called binary pairs." A pair, just like us.

"Welp, that takes written in the stars to a whole nother level doesn't it?" I say, laughing at my terrible joke. Rhys's tough facade cracks and he laughs, something between a snort and a chuckle.

"What was that!" I exclaim, hugging myself and laughing hysterically. A sharp breeze comes and causes the hair on my arms to stand up on end.

Rhys notices this and shrugs off his suit coat, pulling it over my body.

"Thanks," I mutter, pulling the coat closer to my body. The petals of the Rose of Shannon flutter in the wind as he fixes the coat.

"Always." He says in response standing awkwardly in the wind. I sigh, what had I done? Woman up Talulah, go show your feelings. I exhale deeply and run up to Rhys and hug him, giving him some of my warmth.

"Lulah?" Rhys stands there, speechless and stuck like a deer in headlights. I notice that he's stiffened and bite my lip, why did I do that? He obviously doesn't have feelings for me anymore? I shake my head slightly,

"I'm sorry. I just,- nevermind." I dismiss the thought and start to let go of his structured body. Instead of letting go, like I thought he would, Rhys tightens his grip around me,

"Lulah." He says sternly, making my heart make extra thumping sounds. I peer up at him,

"Yes, Rhys?" I ask, smiling so I could diffuse the situation. Rhys stifles a chuckle looking at my crazy face,

"Would you mind finishing your sentence?" He asks, sweeping a rogue strand of hair behind my ear. My cheeks blaze in a red fury, causing my face to heat up.

"I might or might not like you." I shrug, hearing his barely audible heartbeat start to speed up, going faster than the speed of sound.

"Really?" He asks as I look up at his chiseled face. His eyes scrunch up as he blushes as well.

"Welp, self-control is now thrown out the window." He chuckles, bowing down to attach his lips to mine. Taking my face in his hands slowly.

This, this was a kiss. Not someone springing it on me with no warning, not someone having a single-sided crush on me. Rhys's mother was right, love has both people showing faces with love on it. And now both of us had signed the document with our ring fingers, intertwining our lives even more.

Finally, Rhys pulls away, both of us breathless. I lightly touch my lips, hoping that this was a dream. Rhys does the same, a bit less flabbergasted,

"Wow." He breathes out and I join him,

"That-that was something." I join, sitting gently next to him. Wiping my hands on the satin material of my dress.

We overhear the yelling coming from inside the venue and point towards the lit up building.

"We should probably go back?"I ask, starting to slip my heels back onto my feet. Rhys catches a glimpse of the six-inch heels and his jaw drops,

"You've been walking on those all evening?" He asks, his voice rising in pitch, I make a sour face at the mention of the heels.

"Yup."

"I have a newfound respect for women."

"You should," I say, wincing when the heel hits one of my blisters. Rhys holds his hand out for me, looking me in the eyes,

"Shall we?" I grab his hand a tight squeeze,

"We shall."

Rhys gives me a radiant smile as we walk back to the venue. The flowers that had wilted had slowly started to come to life, our life giving them life. He hummed Alaska by Maggie Rogers while we walked hand in hand.

We step inside the venue, the place full of energy and life. Most people were near the food, and the others were either at the bar or on the dance floor.

"Do you want a cake?" Rhys asks, pointing at the almost gone vanilla cake.

"Aw crap. We missed the cake cutting." I pout, crossing my arms and trying to locate Kai or Minkara.

"Cake?" Rhys tries again, but this time is successful as my stomach is grumbling in hunger.

"Let them have cake!" I scream, dragging Rhys to the cake table and getting each of us a reasonably sized piece of the cake.

I stab the floral cutlery into the piece of sponge cake, moaning in delight when that taste hits my taste buds. Rhys looks up, startled from the noise,

"Is it good?" He asks, wiping his mouth with the napkin. I hurriedly nod while shoving cake into my mouth by the mouthfuls. Out of the corner of my eye, I finally spot Kai and Minnie sitting at their table. I point towards the table,

"Let's go talk to them." I rush out, pulling Rhys along, giving him no chance to respond. Minkara's face seems to brighten much more when she sees us holding hands,

"I take it that you guys have made up?" She asks, putting her chin in her palms, resting her arms on the white satin table cover. Rhys smiles, kissing the crown of my head as I lean into his touch,

"Yes, yes we did." He murmurs getting a gag from Kai,

"How is it possible that I feel like a third wheel at my own wedding?"

And that's it.

That's the end of B-Side.

Thank you for reading this book and participating in the journey. I'm gonna miss writing about Talulah and Rhys so much. Happy New Year and make sure to stay safe.

With all the love possible
