Now that's one writing advice I saw on Pinterest and here's the post.
And do you know I kinda agree with it.
I have done it just once (if we are just considering the DC fanfics and not my other fanfics) but I am so happy with how the whole story turned out. The protagonist did not exactly die in the middle of the story but in a very climactic scene after two thirds of my story were done and that death changes the entire outcome.
There are only ten more chapters after the climax but I took those chapters and elaborated on the aftermath of the protagonist's death, showing how the other characters took it, the effect it had on the whole plot, how it affected the growth and development of characters closely associated with the protagonist etc.
Those who have read my most favorite fanfic I have ever written on this site know exactly what I am talking about (not giving the name because this guide is a spoiler free zone but you're free to guess).
And do you know I am thinking of doing it again because I am so delighted with the way that story turned out and I want to give it one more try. True killing off a character, especially the protagonist, is very hard since we as authors have thought about this specific character the most and based an entire story around him or her. And I still feel the guilt of doing it in that story I mentioned earlier.
But seeing the readers cry in the comments is so satisfying...
No I am kidding, don't take it personally. (But I am not kidding about killing off another very important character so be warned).
You are free to guess which poor soul is going to suffer at my hands. In fact, I look forward to read your comments.
Have a lovely day guessing what's going to happen.
And for those who are getting worried already, relax, it's not going to happen so soon. I have a habit of striking when the readers least expect it.
