Kurapika smoothed down his shirt in the mirror. He liked this shade of blue on him. But he hadn't wore this shirt in six or seven years. It was a shock that it still fit him. Wait, was it eight years? Kurapika chuckled. Who cares? All he knows is the last time he wore this button-up was when he was still in his 20's.

"Daddy!" A voice exclaimed. Kurapika turned and laughed as his son ran into his arms. "Good morning, birthday boy," Kurapika said. "Did your alarm do a good job of waking you up this morning?" His son, Malakai, shook his head. "No," he said, sadly. "Mister Leorio woke me up!"

Kurapika smiled. "Did he," he asked. "That's great. Now go get dressed!" Malakai ran off into his room. Kurapika looked back into the mirror and pulled his hair up.

He walked out into the kitchen. Leorio was sitting at the table, sipping coffee. He pointed to the counter. "Your cup is over there," he said. "Killua and Gon already left for school." Kurapika walked over and took his cup. He took a sip and smiled, "I'm proud of those boys. Going to college." Leorio chuckled. "Yeah, after waiting for a few years after eighteen," he said. Kurapika shrugged. "Not like you were any better," he said. Leorio frowned. "I was poor," he responded. "I didn't have the money."

A few minutes later, Malakai ran into the kitchen. "Daddy," he said, flapping his sleeves about. "Do I have to get my hair brushed this morning? It hurts." Kurapika sighed. "No," he said. "Someone woke you up late. Now you only have time for breakfast before the bus arrives. But after school, Mister Leorio will brush your hair. Okay?" Malakai nodded and jumped up into a chair.

"What's for breakfast," Malakai asked. Kurapika smiled. "Scones," he replied. "Because it's your birthday." Malakai's face lit up. "What kind," he asked. Kurapika glanced at him. "Blueberry," he said. "But you'll have to take it with you and eat at school." Malakai frowned, "Oh. Okay."

Kurapika bagged the scone and handed it to Malakai. "Go outside," Kurapika said. "The bus should be here any second. Don't forget your cupcakes!" Malakai grabbed his cupcakes off the table, ran outside, and just after, the familiar sound of a school bus could be heard.

Before allowing his son to get on the vehicle, Kurapika leaned down. He cupped Malakai's face in his hands. "Remember," he said. "Don't get too excited at school. We need to keep those pretty eyes of yours a secret." Malakai nodded, a determined look on his face. Then he turned to the bus.

Kurapika watched as Malakai climbed on before he turned back inside, out of the cold December air.

"I can't thank you enough," Kurapika said once he got indoors. "For letting us stay. By us, I mean Malakai and me." Leorio shrugged, "I let Killua and Gon stay too. You're not special." Kurapika laughed. "True," he said. "But I ghosted you for a year after we returned from Greed Island. Then you just let me into your home, with a kid, who was a baby at the time. You're just an amazing person." Leorio took another sip of his coffee. "No matter what you do," he said. "You'll remain my best friend forever."

Kurapika felt his heart skip a beat. He had known Leorio for at least thirteen years. And for twelve of those years, Kurapika wanted more than a friendship. He could say it was a "crush", if that was the appropriate word for a man in his early 30's to use. For the time it had lasted you could say Kurapika was in love. And he still was.
