Leorio sat in the living room. He was alone, watching the clock ticking. He didn't like being alone. He was off work today for reasons that he didn't know. Kurapika was substituting for a middle school class. That was at least an hour longer than when he did Elementary or Preschool.
Leorio didn't want Kurapika to leave that morning. "Please stay," he said, hugging his husband from behind. Kurapika lightly pushed Leorio off of him. "I have to," he said. "This is a decent paying job! I get paid twelve ninety-five an hour! Plus, I like kids!" Leorio sighed. "I don't like being alone," he muttered. "It's scary. My anxiety starts acting up."
Kurapika turned to him, slipping on a yellow sweater. "I know, baby," he said. "But I can't cancel last minute. That would be too difficult for the school. I love you but I need to go." He opened the door and looked back, "I'll be back before you know it."
Now, Leorio was still alone. For three hours he stayed in bed, reading a book. Then he got hungry and bored. So he went downstairs, made himself lunch, and sat on the couch. Now, he was still on the couch. Still on the couch, waiting for his husband to come home.
At four pm, the door opened. Leorio jumped up and ran to the front door. He took Kurapika in his arms. "I'm so glad you're home," Leorio said. Kurapika smiled. "You're like a big dog," he said. "Down boy."
Leorio let go of Kurapika. "I thought you were dead," he said. "The middle school is twenty minutes away. It took you thirty to get here!" "I needed to clean up the classroom. And there's no way that I could've died while substituting." "Gas leaks, a fire, school shooting, car crash, you could've gotten shot because you used to be a mafia boss! What if you accidentally used your chains on someone who wasn't a Phantom Troupe member? Or if the Emperor Time kicked in?"
Kurapika smiled. That wasn't the reaction Leorio expected to get. "I'm fine Leorio," Kurapika said. "The Emperor Time won't kick in for a while now," he said. "I'll probably be all old and wrinkly when it does. I didn't lose that many years. As for my chains...I haven't used them in awhile. But I might need to."
Between two fingers, he handed Leorio a letter. On the envelope was the symbol of the Hunter's Association. It had already been open, so Kurapika must have read it already. Leorio unfolded the letter.
To Leorio and Kurapika Paladiknight,
First, I would like to congratulate you on your marriage. I hope you're well. I am.
This letter has been sent because we need you on a mission. This Saturday, if the letter gets to you on time, there will be a festivity. It is in New Mexico. If it's too far we can report someone else. The gala will start at 10:00 pm. You will go as Mister and Misses Smith. Leorio will be Alexander Smith, a businessman who has been wrapped up in illegal activities. Kurapika, you will be Diana Smith, you have no idea what activities your husband is involved in.
Your target is Alejandro Fernandez. He's illegally selling body parts. It is an auction but not one that you're used to. Bidders will put papers with prices written in a bin as if it were a prize drawing. The bids will be counted and the parts will be given to the highest bidder. It has to be you. We'll provide the money. Make sure you get Alejandro. Your costumes should have arrived with this note.
Wishing the best,
CheadleLeorio looked up. Kurapika was holding two packages. "Costumes are right here," he said. Leorio sighed. "I miss when we had to sign up for these things," he muttered. "Wow. Saying that makes me feel old." Kurapika laughed. "Start packing old man," he said. "Our flight is at six am."
