Part 2 to "Little" Fires
The funeral is always the worst part. The black, the sadness hanging through the room, burying the body. Especially when the body is barely recognizable. Those were only some of the worst parts. There were still people coming up and saying sorry. As if they had anything to be sorry for. It wasn't their fault.
All of that was what Kurapika hated. But he also hated the fact that it was Leorio's funeral. And he hated that he had to see Killua and Gon here as well. They weren't talking, which means it was bad. They were usually talkative. So talkative.
Leorio's mother came up to Kurapika. "Hey," she said. "How are you doing?"
Kurapika sighed. "Not too good," he replied.
Rosa frowned. "The feeling will pass," she said. "In a matter of time. It's different for everyone. Until then, do whatever you need to. And I want you to know that we consider you part of the family, okay? You can come over for holidays and everything."
Kurapika nodded and blinked back tears. He wasn't going to cry now. Not with Gon and Killua there.
Kurapika wiped his eyes and looked back up at Rosa. "Are you going to speak," he asked.
Rosa nodded. "I know you don't want to," she said. "And that's okay. We'll have some of his friends do that."
Kurapika nodded. "O-okay," he said.
Rosa wrapped her arms around Kurapika. "You're family. Don't forget that." She walked away and to the room where service was being held.
Kurapika looked at Killu and Gon beside him. He bent his knees, getting eye-level with the children. "You guys okay," he asked.
Gon looked up at him and back down at the floor. "Is Leorio really gone," he asked.
Kurapika took a deep breath. "Sadly," he said. "Yes he is. And we're all going to miss him very much."
Gon sniffed. Killua stood beside him, expressionless.
Kurapika looked at Gon and tried his best to smile. "Let's go to the next room okay," he said. "Service is being held there."
Gon nodded and followed Kurapika into the the room. They found their seats and sat down.
The service lasted for at least an hour. And during it, Kurapika managed to keep himself from breaking down. Afterwards, Rosa came over to talk to him, as did Melody and Dr. Kinen. They said sorry. Kurapika hated that people had to say sorry. It wasn't their fault. It was whoever started the fire. However it was caused.
Kurapika walked home. He had taken a uber to the funeral home but he just couldn't take one back. He could break down at any given moment. That would've been too embarrassing. And they would say sorry too, if they knew where he was coming from. Kurapika wiped his eyes. He should keep himself from crying. A lot of people were walking today. After all, the weather seemed to be nice. But to Kurapika he couldn't see nice in anything right now.
Kurapika looked up from the sidewalk. He was almost home. Just a few more houses to past. Around this time Leorio should be getting home from work. But Kurapika knew he wouldn't be. Kurapika began to tear up. He covered his eyes with his sleeve and ran home. On the porch were flowers, from neighbors. There was a card. Sorry for your loss.
Kurapika hated it. He hated the apologies. They didn't help.
He picked up the flowers and brought them inside. He threw them on the counter, if he missed he wasn't sure. He didn't care.
He looked up form the ground. The house was the same but seemed different. To Kurapika the colors were dull and everything seemed to be labeled. A label that said For One.
Kurapika slowly walked to his bedroom. Just his. He climbed in the bed, not caring he still had his formal clothes on. He lied there for a moment. Turning to his side he grabbed the pillow next to him. What used to be Leorio's pillow.
Kurapika hugged the pillow and began to sob. It was loud sobbing, almost screaming. He was sure the neighbors could hear. But he didn't care. He wanted to cry, he needed to. And he would cry for a long time. Usually Leorio was here to comfort him and stop him form crying so much. But Leorio was gone. And Kurapika had been holding in the tears for so long. He couldn't help it.
Kurapika held the pillow close to him. He fell asleep with it in his arms. It was good enough. He liked to cuddle. But now all he had was the pillow. And the bed. Just him in a big empty house with no one by his side.
