TW: Toxic Relationship, Abuse

Leorio stared at the clock as the seconds ticked past. He tapped his pen on his desk, rhythmically with the hands on the clock. His ring sat next to the papers he was studying. It was four am and he was still awake. He should sleep, he needed to work the next day. He always needed to work.

Leorio pulled the chain on his desk lamp, covering the room in darkness. He pushed out his chair, using the moonlight as a guide to the door. He walked across the hall, to his bedroom. He opened the door slowly and peered in. His wife, Michelle, was fast asleep.

Leorio walked in. He took his glasses off and placed them on the nightstand. Still quiet and slow as ever, he climbed into the bed. He winched, feeling a pinch when he lied on his arm. A bruised arm but nothing big.

"Hey, baby." Michelle wrapped her arms around Leorio's abdomen. She was tired, it reflected in her voice.

Leorio smiled. "You should be asleep," he responded. "It's late."

"Past three am is early. And you should be asleep too."

"Mhm. I was working."

"You're always working."

"I always have work."

Michelle sighed. Using her right hand she traced Leorio's stubble. "You should shave," she said. "You look younger without a beard."

Leorio yawned. "I'll do it in the morning," he said. Of course, he knew that it was already morning. His idea of the morning had always been when the sun was shining. Sunshine. He missed Sunshine. The last time they had talked was, four years ago maybe?

Leorio often found himself wondering what his friend was up to. About his revenge. How it went. If he was even alive.

Leorio often found himself missing things. Missing his laugh, his smile, the smell of his hair, the taste of his lips... Things one shouldn't think of a friend, especially when married.

"What's wrong, hun," Michelle asked. She looked into Leorio's eyes, frowning. Had she already done her makeup this morning? Of course, she hasn't, she's been asleep, Leorio answered his question.

"Reminiscing," Leorio said. "I miss the past."

"Aren't you happy with me? You better not be thinking of an ex!"

"I am happy with you," Leorio quickly responded. "I wasn't thinking of an ex." Was he? Technically, he and Kurapika never dated. They never said they were. Never called the other one their boyfriend. They were both aware that the other had feelings for them. They went out, kissed, held hands, cuddled, and more. But neither one confirmed that they were dating. So they weren't. Right?

"Hmph. That's what I thought," Michelle said. "Now let's sleep. You have to wake up in two hours."

Leorio silently agreed. He closed his eyes and steadied his breathing. He erased all the thoughts of Kurapika.

Until there was a knock at the door.

Leorio sat up rather quickly. He was jumpy and had always been that way.

He felt Michelle's petite hand brush against his bicep.

"What was that," she asked.

"Just some knocking," Leorio said. "I'll go answer." That being said, he swung his legs over the edge of the bed. Picking up his glasses from the nightstand, he began to walk out of the room. As he walked down the hall, the knocking became more urgent. "Hold on," he yelled. "I'll be there in a second!" He turned on the living room light. Who could be here so early? Police? Someone from the hospital? Leorio had no idea.
