Prompt: (My own angst mind gave me an idea)
TW: Character death
Kurapika woke up late. Really late. He turned on his side to see the space next to him empty. He reached out his hand laying it there. Leorio must've gone to work. He had the late shift tonight.
Kurapika swung his legs over the side of the bed and yawned. He had woken up so late, why was he still tired? He walked into the bathroom and looked in the mirror. He looked tired too and his hair was a mess. He yawned again. Maybe a hot shower would wake him up. He walked to turn on the shower. He let out a sigh of relief as it turned on.
At the moment the quietness of the house made him feel uneasy. It didn't feel right. Leorio was supposed to be at work but it felt wrong.
Kurapika pulled his shirt over his head to take it off. He looked in the mirror again. An expressionless face stared back. It was his own.
He didn't like waking up late. He enjoyed hearing Leorio's voice before he left. Telling him to have a good day he even enjoyed when he said goodbye. Just hearing his voice and feeling Leorio's lips on his own. He enjoyed it all and missed it when he woke up late.
Kurapika stepped into the shower. He sighed again as he felt the hot water on his skin. It felt nice. He hummed a tune as he showered. He felt much better now. The silence no longer bothered him. He stood under the water letting it soak his hair. How calming. He finished showering and climbed out of the shower. After getting out of a hot shower the air felt cold. It sent a chill.
Kurapika got dressed and walked into the kitchen. He placed a pan on the stove and turned it on. An omelet would do for dinner. Maybe it was lunch since it wasn't quite dark yet. As the pan was warming up, the butter melting Kurapika got the eggs from the fridge. He yawned again. He sure was tired. He cracked the eggs over the pan starting his omelet.
When the food was done cooking, Kurapika scooped it up and put it on a plate. He walked into the living room and sat on the couch. He turned on the tv and flipped through a few channels before finding something interesting. He sat on the couch eating his food and watching tv. He watched the tv for hours. He was bored and couldn't wait until Leorio got home.
Speaking of which maybe he sent a message. Kurapika left his phone in the bedroom and didn't think to check his notifications. He walked into the kitchen and placed his plate in the sink. He could wash it later. He walked to his bedroom and picked up his phone from the nightstand. One text from Leorio. Just five minutes ago. He smiled and opened the text.
I love you
Kurapika felt his heart stop. Why did he send this text for no reason? Leorio isn't the type to do that in a simple message. Was he? But there was no context for the message. Did that matter? Maybe it was because he left before he could say it this morning. But it was such a recent message.
Kurapika didn't care. He was going to see if everything was alright. The hospital wasn't that far away. A forty-minute walk, a thirty-minute run. Kurapika ran out the door not caring to turn off the tv. He ran down the street not even thinking about where to go. Not even caring about the cool autumn air.
He had memorized the way to the hospital now. It was no problem to run. It was quick and Kurapika had passed the hunter's exam. However, his breaths were heavy and rushed. Not from running, but from panic. Everything could be alright and he could've left for nothing but Kurapika kept running. If everything was alright he could go home. He could go home. Leorio could go home. They could go home.
When he got to the hospital Kurapika's stomach dropped. He froze staring up at the building. The huge building that was engulfed in flames.
There was a crowd of people outside gathered around the hospital. The sky was filled with smoke making it darker than it already was. Firemen were walking in and out of the building. Every time one walked out they brought someone with them. The person would run to a family member, crying.
Kurapika walked through the crowd. Leorio wasn't there. Kurapika looked back at the building. No. No, no, no, no, no.
"Kurapika?" A women's voice. Kurapika turned to see Leorio's co-worker and a good friend of his, Dr. Kinen.
"Kurapika," she said. "What are you doing here?"
Kurapika looked at her. "I," he started. "I got a t-text. I wanted to see if everything was o-okay." He was shaking.
Kinen put her hands on his shoulders. "It's gonna be okay," she said.
Kurapika swallowed. "W-where's Leorio," he asked.
Kinen bit her lip. "He's in there," she said. "He wanted to help some patients. But don't worry."
"It's gonna be okay," she repeated.
Kurapika pulled away from her. He nodded and she sighed.
"I'm going to check on other people," Kinen said. "You stay here and wait for me or Leorio." She walked off.
Kurapika looked at the building. More firemen, more people, no Leorio. People were arguing with the firemen. Asking about their family. Wanting to go inside.
Kurapika's vision blurred from tears. He looked down at his hands. Despite the blurriness, he could tell they were shaking. He looked back at the building, blinking tears out of his eyes. He ran forward towards the burning building. Kinen called out his name but he didn't listen. Maybe he could stop one more death. One more death of someone he loved.
A fireman grabbed Kurapika's wrist. "You can't go in there," he said. "It's dangerous."
"You don't understand," Kurapika responded. "My boyfriend's in there." He was still crying. "Let me go."
The fireman pulled him back. "I'm sorry," he said. "You can't. If he's still in there, we'll get him out." The man didn't let go of Kurapika's wrist maybe it was because he was struggling.
"Please. Please let me go."
There was a sound of something heavy falling. Kurapika returned his attention to the hospital. The roof was caving in. It was too burnt to hold itself up. It all fell. Someone screamed, maybe it was Kurapika. But there was too much commotion.
Kurapika stopped struggling. He had realized that Leorio wasn't coming home. And he never was.
How he wished he had heard Leorio say goodbye that morning.
