Never Tear us Apart- 3

Elena looked at Joel as she got dressed. He was sound asleep. It was breaking dawn. 

She stood still for a moment watching him.

"I am sorry."- she said and walked out of the room. She took a pen she found on the sideboard and a post-it- she wrote-
 'This was the best date I ever had. Thank you. Always and forever, Elena'

She then walked out of the apartment. 

"Don't look back!"- she said to herself and walked down the road. Then eventually she got a taxi. It took her to her apartment. As she got in, she took a bag and put a few of her favourite clothing items in and left the rest. It was not the first time she had to do this. But this time it was for a completely other reason.

She looked at her phone again and read the message once again.

"Katherine has Caroline. She demands to see you."

Elena ordered the taxi driving who was waiting for her to take her to the airport. As she passed through to the departure lounge and hour later, Elena called Bonnie.

"Why does she want me?!"- Elena wanted to know.

"Something is not right with her. I don't know. But you know what she is like. She took Caroline."

"Don't worry, Bonnie. I got the first plane out."

"Did you tell him?"- Bonnie now asked.

"No. He... wouldn't get it. Can we talk later?!"- Elena asked and hung up.

She didn't want to think about anything. She wondered till when her life would be so normal. She put her Ipod on. Music would take the pain away and make easier, so she thought.

Joel woke up and moved with his hand to the side where he thought Elena would be still asleep. He called out for her, but there was no answer. He got to dressed and wandered into the living room. No Elena. He then noticed the post-it on the door. 

"Right."- he said smiling a little recalling the night before -"Always and forever- oh, yeah!"-and then went to the shower. 

Alex found him ready and willing to give more than 1000%.

"I can't stand this glowing cheerful you! You now charmed her and I guess you had a really good night!"

"The best if you need to know! Can we go to work?!"-he said.

"So, when is the wedding?!"- Alex teased.

"Give it up, Alex!"- Joel said.

In the evening as he tried to call Elena, he got a voice- mail every time.

"What the fcuk?!"- Joel was mistified why she wasn't picking up any of his calls. He went up to her apartment. There was no answer. It was as if Elena had vanished. He walked out of the building and found himself again looking into the moon. He had a bad feeling and once again he just shook his head. He walked away. 

Elena arrived in Mystic Falls several hours later. Being back felt like a boomerang had hit her. Bonnie had met her already in Richmond.

"Why didn't you tell him?!"

"What?! Oh, you know, I am a doppelganger and my doppelganger form 1492 has a friend of mine,who is a vampire and she is holding her hostage because she wants to see me for some crazy vampire virus, because I have mystcal blood ,and  btw she is very paranoid and insane and vicious?!"

"Sorry...you are right..."- Bonnie said sighing a bit.

"He is so... everything we are not. And I don't think he would understand any of it. To him, all what is so normal to us, is a joke... folklore."- Elena said and then looked out of the window thinking of the night she had spent with him. His kisses still burnt on her skin.

"Ok...we do this and then you go back to Toronto and live your life!"- Bonnie said.

"Yeah... till the next thing comes along... this is Katherine we are talking about. I don't want her to know that Joel exists! it's better this way!"

"How would she know?! Come on, we killed the Originals!"- Bonnie said.

"This is Katherine we are talking about. She has been escaping Klaus for 500 years. She probably has plan A, B, C, D to survive!"- Elena reminded Bonnie of the doppelganger's cunningness.

And Elena was right. After Katherine got what she needed. She left taking Matt with her to the place she had kept Caroline. It was somewhere in the hills miles away from Mystic Falls. Elena nd Bonnie waited to hear from Matt that they were both fine. Katherine left them, but her shadow hung over Elena. 

"Hey..."- Bonnie came to Elena who was preparing something to eat for them "aren't you going to call him?"

"No."- Elena said-"he needs to live his life. And he will be fine, but without me. He has probably  already found someone else. He told me that most of his relationships broke up because of his one night stands. He is not Elijah."

"Elena, you are telling yourself all this just to find an excuse. Maybe he would get it. We did!"- Bonnie said.

Elena put the chopped carrots in the pot and silently carried on with the rest of the cooking.

"I need to cook."-Elena said to her friend.

Bonnie left the kitchen. She let it be for the moment.

In Toronto,  as Elena's phone kept going to voice-mail, it was clear to Joel that Elena had done to him exactly what he had done to so many other women. He had fallen for her hard, something he thought never would happen to him. To fight the pain he just worked and spent every hour possible trying to forget about Elena. 

As he got home, he put the radio on and went to take a beer from the fridge.
