~A few months later~

"School sounds like a blast! Learning new things, meeting new friends. Sad that it ended!" Pine-Tree exclaimed.

"Haha! Yeah, it is pretty fun, I guess. I'm happy that it's ended so that I can have a break but I'm sad because I don't see my friends as often. I'm more of a- what people call a 'social butterfly'. I mostly like school because I get to talk to my friends everyday." Mabel explained. Trying to paint the picture.

"But aren't you supposed to go to school to learn about the world around you? Not just talk to friends all day?" Pine-Tree asked.

"I guess but- I'm not the one to be into nerdy things, I can tell you would though!" Mabel exclaimed.

Pine-Tree was confused by her words. "Nerdy things? What do you mean by 'Nerdy Things'?" He asked.

Mabel shrugged. "I don't know, like books, reading, learning- stuff you like, essentially. You told me you loved reading."

The boy smiled. "Yeah- I love to read! I guess we don't have to like the same things. My friends 8-Ball, Teeth, and Paci-fire don't like reading, but we're still friends."

Mabel just sat there... he must have a really weird group of friends if they give each other those nicknames... no wonder he's not social. She thought to herself.

~A few hours later~

"So he just randomly appeared out of a portal in your basement?" Pine-Tree questioned. Mabel nodded. "My Grunkle Stan was able to turn it on because of some journal I found hidden in the woods a while back. Turns out that journal I found belonged to my Grunkle Ford, the one from the portal." She explained to the boy.

Pine-Tree was very intrigued by her story, it hit his interest hard. He wanted to learn more and more. He couldn't stop listening, even though she's told the story several times.

"Ya know- I could seriously sit here for days and just listen to your adventures with your friends." The boy said. "I wish my friends would go on adventures with me..."

The girl cocked an eyebrow at his statement. "Huh? You said you had friends though?"

Pine-Tree sighed. "I do- but they keep to themselves a lot. They only really talk or play with me after I bud in or beg them. And even then, it's not really long lived. They get tired or bored really fast. Not to mention when they are having fun it's just them torturing others..."

"Oh... pretend torture like where some act as a mad scientist or something and another acts as the patient?" Mabel asks.

The boy shrugged. "I guess so, but Bill always gets someone new to play as the patient. And they're always really good at acting, it looks realistic, they use fake blood and everything!"

Mabel seemed instantly a little tense. "Ummm- that's some real dedication!" She laughed nervously.

"Are you okay, Mabel? You look a little pale... Did- Did I say something wrong?" Pine-Tree asked with a worried and sad expression on his face.

"No! You didn't! Trust me! I was uh- uhhh- just wondering if m-maybe you'd like to read the journal I found in the woods, my great uncles let me keep it until Grunkle Ford needed it again. It has a lot of random stuff in it from adventures he's been on. Maybe you'd like it!" Mabel said, pulling out an old looking red book with a six fingered hand with a three in the middle.

Pine-Tree nodded and gladly took the book and flipped through there were tons of pages just filled with information on Unicorns, Gnomes, Ghosts, Codes, Mysterious doors, all types of mysteries. It was exactly what he needed! But there wasn't enough time in the day for him to read it all... the sun was already about to set and the sky was turning to a beautiful pink color.

"You can take it for the week if you want, just promise you'll bring it back, okay?"

The boy's eyes lit up with excitement. "Okay! I promise!" He exclaimed, putting the book in his yellow vest. It looked as if it wasn't even there. Perfect!

"Alright then! I'll see ya later, Alligator!" Mabel exclaimed enthusiastically before turning and going back home.

Pine-Tree made his way back to a shadow and went back to his home as well.

"So! How was your day, Pine-Tree?" Bill asked when he brought the boy back from his weekly adventure.

"It was- okay! Same as always... That world will never get old to me!" Pine-Tree laughed, trying his best to make sure Bill didn't notice the book hidden in his clothing. Luckily for him, his attempts worked.

"That's great to hear, kiddo! Anyways- go back home and get some rest, I would talk to you more but tomorrow I am going to start teaching you some things and you're going to need to be well-rested for it. Understood?"

Pine-Tree nodded before saying his goodbyes and going on his way... he couldn't believe it! Bill didn't see the book. Oh- how lucky he was. But- how stupid he was as well... Bill's going to find out what he's been doing at some point... and when he does... there's going to be no escaping the harsh punishment Bill has in store...

Pine-Tree loved Bill and admired and looked up to him greatly... but he was also terribly frightened- not by the demon himself, but the power he possesses over him. Bill could easily kill him in 2 seconds if he wanted... but he wouldn't do that would he? Certainly not!

But then again- he's breaking Bill's rules... Sure- he's broken rules before but those were minor... this one... this one was huge... worse than anything he's ever done before.

The boy stopped in his tracks, he stayed there for a good 5 minutes debating whether he should turn around and tell Bill everything... His breathing and heart rate increased. His eyes started stinging, his mind; so conflicted... What would Bill do to him? He's been keeping secrets and lying to Bill- the person who's raised him- for months... months! It's not like he only just saw a human today and sparked up a tiny conversation- no. He's been having hour-long conversations with this human for months...

Realizing that he was standing in the middle of nowhere, he trudged on. Still fighting with himself on what to do.

When he walked into his room he had a feeling in his stomach... he didn't like it at all.

He lied to Bill...

He hated what he was doing.

He hated himself for keeping this going.

He was in too deep already.

There was no going back.

Bill would never forgive or trust him again...

What has he done?
