                            Cocky Girl

He was the school's golden boy. He was smart and funny and charming and cute (which she would never say aloud). He was a very valuable player on the varsity basketball team and he played the guitar at school events when asked. Everybody loved him and everybody wanted to be with him.

She was not one of his followers though. She understood the praise, but she would never admit that because his ego was larger than necessary. They never interacted with each other because they never needed to. If only things stayed that way.

She walked into English one day, having no idea what was in store. She sat in her usual seat and waited for the class to start. Once it did, the teacher announced that they were doing a new project with assigned partners.

She started overthinking because like any normal person, she hated working with others. It was always stressful. She hoped and prayed that her partner wasn't annoying or useless. The teacher went on and on about the details and expectations of the assignment. Once they finished explaining everything, they presented the pairings.

Her brain went into more panic when she noticed that she had to work with him. He turned to look at her from across the room and winked when they made eye contact. She groaned and sunk into her desk. The teacher announced that they could start working so everyone shuffled around the room to get to their partner.

She just sat back, not wanting to get sucked into the classroom's traffic and to stay away from him for as long as possible. But sadly, he slid into the desk next to her, causing her to sit up. "Hello, gorgeous," he said, smirking at her. She cringed before saying, "Hi." "So, are you excited to work with me?" "Nope," she said with a grin. "Ouch," he said, clutching his chest. She just rolled her eyes and looked away from him, trying to hide her smile.

At that moment, he felt really attracted to her. "Come on, babe. I know you were daydreaming about me earlier, just like every other girl here." She looked at him incredulously and said, "Nobody thinkin' 'bout you. Why're you so self-centered?" "I'm not self-centered, I'm honest." He leaned in, getting closer to her and whispered, "We all know you're in love with me." "You wish," she responded, rolling her eyes again. "And what if I do, sweetheart?" "Shut up." "Never."

She gave him the best death glare she could, which made him even more attracted to her than he was before. He just grinned at her, which eventually made her do the same. She shook her head then said, "Alright, you got me. Let's get on with this assignment, shall we?" "We shall, darling." "Chill." "Never."

They began talking about the assignment and brainstorming ideas. They surprisingly worked really well together and they got a good start by the time the period ended. Once the bell rang, they started packing their things up, getting ready to head to their next classes.

She looked up from her backpack to see him staring at her. "What?" She asked. "I was just wondering if you wanted to work on this later." "Facetime me and we'll see if I'll pick up." "Alright, love. I'll catch you later." "I hate you," she said as she walked out the room. "I love you too," he said, following suit. He walked to his next class, excited to get to know her and bother her as they worked together. She walked to her next class, thanking God for partnering them.
