It's been a year since my mom passed away and the pain still lingers in my heart. Every day it's easier to go out and breathe fresh air. I buried myself working to help my dad with my mom's hospital bill. It wasn't so bad but it was enough to put us in debt that we didn't need. My dad still worked at the factory but he gets much more tired now. He was getting older and his body wasn't as strong. His arms would tremble when he would pick up a gallon of milk. It hurt my heart just to see him slowly withering away before my eyes.

I worked at a diner at night. The tips were good and my manager was supportive, whenever I needed to go home and take care of my dad, she would let me. He's been coming home early and sleeping quite a bit. I've asked him what's the matter but he fakes a smile and tells me everything is alright.

I had grabbed the letter my mom left but I never opened it. I wasn't ready to open another part of my life, a part that told me of the person who let my parents keep me. What would my life have been if I was put in a foster home or put up for adoption? Or would I be roaming the streets, finding a place to sleep? I just didn't want to open that part of my life yet.

I made myself a coffee and sat on a chair in the kitchen. My eyes slowly studied how much better it looked since I was in high school. I had helped my parents remodel some parts of the house that were rundown. I had a part-time job in college and gave all my money to my parents. It helped with remodeling the kitchen, the bathroom, and the dining room. So many memories of hanging with Zeus crossed my mind. When he helped my mom make a cake for me on my birthday. It was a double chocolate cake, he even wrote my name in his handwriting. He always had such elegant writing. He was elegant with a pure heart. Why did I brush him away?

I heard a loud knock on the door. I scrunched my brow and walked towards the front door. The whiff of coffee invaded my nostrils as I took a small sip. I opened the door. It was an elegant man in a sharp suit. He held a suitcase while I studied his stern posture. "Good afternoon. My name is Bryan Shaw. I'm from Forrest Bank, is Andrew Knight available?" his voice was proper as he finally gave me a cheeky smile.

Forrest Bank, that's where my dad sends the house payments. "He is resting at the moment. I'm his son, Beau Knight, can I help you with anything?" I asked.

"May I come in?" he said properly.

I moved and faintly smiled at him. What was someone from the bank doing here? I know my dad has made payments towards the house.

I closed the door while Bryan stood by the entrance. "Would you like a cup of coffee?" I offered. He simply smiled and shook his head.

"No, thank you. I shouldn't be here long."

We walked into the lounge room. I gestured at the couch for him to sit. "May I ask why are you here?"

"Yes," he sat down while I stood. I gripped the handle of my coffee cup a bit harder. My heart was pounding inside my chest. "Your dad hasn't been paying the mortgage for 6 months now and I'm here to offer a settlement," I swallowed hard at what he just told me.
