Detective Hampton studied me as his eyes got glossy. "Your parents did well in raising you." His eyes shot away and then back at me. "I heard they passed away. I'm so sorry."

"It still hurts when I talk about them but I'm healing. I found my biological dad," I glanced at my dad who had the biggest grin on his face. He squeezed my shoulder as I glanced back at Detective Hampton.

"This is Markus Empire, my father."

"Of course I know who this man is. He's donated to this police department. Derrick Hampton, pleasure," he stretched his arm and shook my dad's hand.

"Pleasure is all mine but I have a question. Why didn't you give my son to social services? I could've found him sooner," this is the first time I've heard my dad's voice a bit huskier.

Detective Hampton loosened his tie and gave me a sympathetic gaze. He took a deep breath and got up. He walked to the window and looked out. "It was late at night and an older couple came in. I was the only one that night. They had the most beautiful halo over them and then I heard a baby cry. They told me that they found him left on their doorstep," he stopped and sat on his chair again. His eyes aligned with mine.

"The way they looked at you is only a parent looks at their children. They had already fallen in love with you but they knew they couldn't keep you. I've done this a long time and when social services get involved. It's a mess sometimes, these babies get dumped and end up in the streets or foster homes, most of the time no one looks for abandoned babies because it's usually the mothers that do these horrible choices."

I swallowed the knot in my throat and contained my tears from falling. Why did my mom abandon me? My dad already told me but I need to hear it from her mouth. I need to hear her words even if it hurts. I want closure from the past and this is the way.

"Detective Hampton, I didn't bother coming to this division but I did look for my son. I hired a private detective but it was a dead end. My son's mother wouldn't speak about where she left him. Her lawyers said she had a severe postpartum and that's why she did what she did. She supposedly got amnesia and forgot where she left Beau," my dad's jawline clenched as I saw him ball his hand in a fist. "I should've just went the old fashion way and came to the police station." my dad glanced at me and gave me his signature smirk. "But I'm glad my son walked through my door."

"And I'm sorry I didn't take Beau into social services but this couple had happiness in their eyes from just holding Beau. I knew what I was doing was wrong but I couldn't take this baby away from them. I told them to take Beau home and give him the best life he can get," Detective Hampton. cleared his throat. "And you got raised into a healthy young man." I chuckled as my dad grabbed my hand.

"Yes, he's a great kid and I'm going to spoil him, whether he likes it or not," we all laughed at my dad's words. He has a heart of gold and I'm glad I found him. Now to finally go see my mother.
