Stirring to the feeling of soft lips kissing her shoulder, Sierra rolls over to offer a tired smile. "Morning," she greets. He kisses her cheek then forehead while her fingers thread through his hair. "We need a lot of energy today."
"I know." He sighs. "I don't think I can do it."
"Me neither." He deflates and lays his head on her shoulder. "Maybe if we stay really quiet," she whispers, "we can stay in bed all day."
As if the world had waited for those words specifically, Hope's high-pitched laughter dances through the house and the couple close their eyes in sync.
"I jinxed us."
"Five more minutes." He groans, falling backwards and taking her with him. There's no objections on her part as she curls into him to hide away from the burning sunlight.
A little while later, after a few more failed attempts at leaving the comfort of their warm bed, Sierra pads down the hallway to Hope's room. Still clad in her cotton vest and matching shorts as she peers around the door, unsurprised to discover that Grayson has her hoisted in the air.
"I do hope you weren't planning on tossing her out the window."
"The thought crossed my mind." He plops the girl onto her bed, earning a squeal as she pushes her hair away from her face.
Sierra walks over to play with her dishevelled locks. "She's four today so she's old enough to take you on."
"Yeah!"
"Alright." Kaden groans and rests his arms above his head against the doorframe. "I'm up. Come on you." Hope hurriedly climbs off the bed and rushes over, taking his outstretched hand.
"You guys have fun."
Sierra stops in the doorway. "What?"
"What you have planned today, not my thing." Grayson shakes his head.
"I don't care if it's your thing, it's Hope's birthday she wants you with her."
"I'm good."
"It's not Kaden's thing either but he's sucking it up and doing it for her."
"He's a pushover."
She releases a dry laugh. "He really is not. You are, however, when it comes to Hope. I'm sure her puppy eyes will persuade you."
"Yeah right." He scoffs.
"Mommy!" Hope yells excitedly amidst the mountain of presents.
"That's more than I remember." She saunters over with a quizzical frown.
"Balloons!"
"It'll take her all day to open all of these," Sierra playfully comments. Though her eyes narrow on Kaden's hopeful face and she folds her arms, bending down. "Hope, why don't we help you open these so we're not late for our fun day out?"
"Okay." She grins. Kaden glares when she smirks slyly, pleased that she ruined his plan. "For daddy." She hands him a fairly light present. "For mommy. Oh. Cake for breakfast?"
