Heavy boots march along the pristine floor, blue-grey eyes searching the passing faces as the man barges through. Hope rises from the chair to tightly hug her father once he reaches her. She's more than comforted by his arms wrapping around her.
"You got my text right?"
"Yeah, Gray's tracking them down."
"Is he gonna kill whoever did this? It's not like the guy driving the car did this on purpose. It was the guy who shot him."
"I don't care whether this was accidental or not, everyone who was involved is getting what they deserve." She stays quiet when he somewhat pulls away. "How is she?"
"They haven't told me anything yet."
"The hell happened?" He rests his hands on the ledge running along the wall, head inclined.
"Some guys were shooting at each other. Mom threw herself in front of a car to save me." He catches her bottom lip trembling and holds the side of her head, bringing her closer. "I should've been more careful."
His mouth opens but a metal clang has it snapping shut. Raised voices echo from within the room, accompanied by thumps and bumps. Curious, they separate with Kaden pushing the door open.
"I said don't put your hands on me!" Sierra repeats, pushing the doctor away. He exhales and raises his hands in surrender, taking a step back.
"I said I'm fine. Hey," she scolds and smacks the nurse's hand from her arm. "You people need to be taught a lesson about consent."
"Miss Cosimaー"
"One step closer and you'll regret it," she warns. When he stays put, she continues to tug at the tangled wires hooking her to various machines.
"Mom," Hope breathes.
"Oh thank God." She motions for her to come closer. With an arm around her shoulders, she brings a hand to Kaden's cheek.
"You're okay?" he queries.
"I'm fine, really. Please tell them because these people don't know how to do their jobs. Just send me home, I feel fine."
"Miss Cosima, you are suffering from a mild concussion, you need to rest."
"Love, I've been through worse. Okay? Please can you just get me out of here."
"I'd still like to run a couple more tests to make sure you are actually fine," the doctor informs. "I know you're sat up and talking like normal but I'd rather be safe than sorry." She sighs, feeling Hope squeeze her hand. "A couple tests, you can be out of here by later this afternoon if you give us the all clear now."
"Just a couple," Hope suggests gently.
"Fine." She leans against the pillows. "Hurry."
The doctor nods to the nurse who follows him out, making a mental note of his instructions as he lists them off one after the other.
"You put yourself in front of a car and only got a concussion?" Kaden's forehead creases. "Hope compared you to superwoman when she was younger, I don't think they're just stories anymore."
