Darkness. Nothing but the sound of her own heart beating steadily, ears tuned in to the thick silence lurking the shadows. Then the hairs on the back of her neck are standing tall to alert her of the incoming attack.
Sierra steps aside to dodge the blow, catching an arm and twisting it before kicking the man away. Another wraps his arms around her from behind. She hoists her legs up high and brings them down with force, throwing him down.
Footsteps come and go. Some heavy, some light. They're circling her. Stalking her like prey.
A blinding light attacks her vision with inky spots. It flashes repetitively to disorient her. With the flickering white light she can focus on the shadows moving around her.
Senses them approaching and braces for impact. The two men grab ahold of her arms and pin her to the wall, holding her tight. Her instincts drive her knee into one's groin, leg curling around to hit the crease of his knee.
While he crumbles she strikes the other. Kicks his stomach then face once he's hunched over. She's tugged into a hard body from behind. Sierra shoves him into the wall and throws her elbow into his face.
The hit allows her to throw him down and plant her knee on his neck. Both freeze when the main lights are switched on and the gym illuminates. Kaden removes the mask from his head and gives her a proud smile.
She stands, stretching out a hand. The man below scoffs and takes it. Grayson removes his mask and runs a hand through his messy hair.
"How did I do?"
"Amazing." Kaden pecks her forehead. Her cheeks become rosy from the praise.
"You're lucky I don't want kids." Grayson checks his phone, thumbs becoming a blur as he types a brief message and hits send. Then he's cracking a faint smile at something on his screen.
"You're smiling at your phone a lot recently."
"It's nothing."
"I'm still your friend you know. You can talk to me." Instead of lying about insignificant things.
"I know. I don't have anything to talk about."
"But if you did." Her shoulders rise and fall.
"Okay weirdo." He frowns and makes his way over to the weight rack. She opts to ignore the name and instead thanks Kaden when he returns with a cold drink for her.
"Proud of you."
"I'm glad to hear." She smiles when he sits on the bench and pulls her onto his lap. "I have a good teacher." Fingers swirl through his tousled brown hair. "Handsome one too."
"Thanks," Grayson playfully shouts.
Sierra rolls her eyes. "You're okay."
Kaden chuckles in between planting kisses over her bare shoulder. "You're getting stronger too."
"Been stealing your protein."
"I thought it was Gray."
"It was me." The man smirks, setting his weights down to progress to heavier ones.
