Darry's POV
Dal and I walked around the crowded strip, staying far enough from Miller and Wallace, but close enough to keep an eye on the twins. I just about blew our cover when Wallace punched Pony is the gut. "He just handed the bag to Phaedra." Dally said quietly.
My nerves heightened. My sister confidently strolled over to the buyer. The deal went quicker than I expected. She calmly walked back to Wallace. Wallace handed her something and she and Pony walked away.
I hit Dal on the arm, "let's go. They're done."
"Wait...we can't follow them yet. Wallace will be lookin' for that! Pony and Phaedra know to go to the dingo. Give em' about 10 minutes."
I nodded. I could see his point, but that didn't mean I was thrilled about it.
Johnny's POV
Phaedra and Pony were at the strip, Two-Bit and I sat at the dingo waiting for them to come back. We were all meeting here afterward. It was nerve racking. My girlfriend could get hurt, worse than she already was. I drummed my fingers on the table, causing Two to put his drink down, "they're fine, Johnnycakes."
"Yeah, just worried, ya know."
"Let's think about something else," he said with that glean in his eye, "who do ya think tops? Soda or Steve?"
I felt my face redden, "serious Two," I waited until he took a drink, "obviously it's Steve."
Beer came shooting out of Two-Bit's nose, "I didn't think you'd actually answer!" He grabbed napkins and wiped up the beer in front of him, "shoot kid, coulda said something before I took a drink."
"Where's the fun in that?" I asked, laughing a bit.
"Clearly, you've been hanging around Phaedra a little too much." He shook his head, but he was laughing at the same time, "you really think Steve tops?"
I laughed, "yeah, Soda don't seem like the type."
"Soda don't seem like the type for what?" Soda asked sliding into the seat next to me as Steve sat down next to Two.
I glared at Two, silently begging him to keep his mouth shut, but I forgot who I was talking too, "Johnny, here, thinks that Steve's the butch and your the bitch."
Soda and Steve both stared at me as I stammered, "hey, I didn't say that, well that not what I meant...Two-Bit asked." I was getting all flustered.
Soda cracked up, "chill Johnny."
Steve grabbed Two-Bit's beer, "well, Johnny, you ain't wrong."
It was Soda's turn to blush, "so anyone heard from Phae or Pony?" He asked changing the subject.
As if on cue, Pony and Phaedra came through the door. Soda and I switched places so I could sit by her. I held her tightly, kissing her cheek, "you ok?"
"Yeah," she placed money on the table, "made $70 in less than 3 minutes."
We all stared at the money. There was something captivating about it. None of us ever had $70 just laying around, "what do we do with it?" Pony asked, "we can't spend it."
"Why not?" Two-Bit picked it up off the table, "what harm could it do?"
"How much did Wallace take?" Steve piped up, staring at the wad of cash.
Phaedra shook her head, "I don't know, but this is life changing. Pone, we could put ya through college!"
Ponyboy stared back at her, "we could put both of us through college..." he trailed off, the wheels in his head turning.
I didn't like his expression. I didn't like it one bit.
