Last Christmas I gave you my heart
But the very next day you gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special (special)
Once bitten and twice shy
I keep my distance, but you still catch my eye
Tell me baby, do you recognize me?
Well, it's been a year, it doesn't surprise me
"Merry Christmas" I wrapped it up and sent it
With a note saying "I love you", I meant it
Now I know what a fool I've been
But if you kissed me now, I know you'd fool me again
Last Christmas I gave you my heart
But the very next day you gave it away (you gave it away)
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special (special)
Last Christmas I gave you my heart
But the very next day you gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special
A crowded room, friends with tired eyes
I'm hiding from you and your soul of ice
My God, I thought you were someone to rely on
Me? I guess I was a shoulder to cry on
A face on a lover with a fire in his heart
A man under cover but you tore me apart
Ooh, ooh, now I've found a real love
You'll never fool me again.
December 25th 2019.
I sat by the window in the sitting room staring out at the snow storm going on outside. I could hear the laughs and loud voices of my family in the other room, all of them enjoying their Christmas while I grieve with my mug of vodka, the drink I promised my mum I wouldn't have. All I wanted to do was just lay out outside in the snow and slowly freeze... freeze until I'm ice. I already felt like ice so maybe it wouldn't be so bad after all.
It was only last Christmas we had both of our families up at our apartment for lunch and dinner. I smile as the memories of the mini arguments Damiano and I had in the kitchen while trying to prepare our separate meals, continuously getting in each others way replayed in my head. It was crazy how quickly things could change... That day was only three hundred and sixty five days ago.
"Eve?... Eve darling are you coming through?" I hear my mothers voice ask from the arch in our living room. I don't move my eyes from the snow, I just shake my head no in response as her sigh echoes around the room.
"It's Christmas darling... are you sure you want to sit through here alone?" She questions.
I only nod in response, feared if I attempt to speak I'll cry.
"Okay sweetheart... if you need anything, let me know" I could hear the sadness in her voice. I felt awful but honestly...sitting with my extended family for hours on end was only going to kill me. I could see it now, all the questions that would be asked.
"Oh Eve, where's that lovely boyfriend of yours?"
"Ah yes Damiano right? Lovely boy, you haven't had a fight have you? I wouldn't worry about it Eve... it only gets worse with marriage"
"Eve, sit up. Slouching isn't very ladylike"
"Why the long face huh? It's Christmas! Why can't you just cheer up?"
The sound of someone walking back into the room catches my attention but I still don't turn around. God, didn't she get the hint?
"Mum I said I don't want to" I mumble agitatedly.
"It's dad sweetheart" I hear my dad's voice and it immediately brings me slight comfort. I turn my head to see he had a plate full of food and his own glass.
