KABANATA XXXIX

[JIRSTEN MYLES]

I donʼt know if coming back to this place was a good choice. And then, earlier this morning, Aaron came to our room and told me about Owenʼs mother. Unfortunately, she passed away yesterday.

He lost his mother after he came to me. I knew how much he loved his mother.

It was not the right time to see him. We already parted ways a few years ago. I was also afraid that if I saw him again at his worst, I would remember those feelings I tried to forget for years.

Mabuti na ito. Isa pa, mayroon nang nagmamay-ari sa kaniya.

I took Kyllian to a beach somewhere in Bataan to stay there for our remaining four days.

Lucas bought a vintage house there under my name.

“Ma, are we going to swim after this?” tanong ni Kyel while eating his pancake.

“What are you doing here?” panimula ko.

“Surprise?” sarkastikong tugon niya. “Donʼt get me wrong, I had a business here. I was already in Manila yesterday. I also met Dein.”

Tinaasan ko siya ng kulay.

“And I brought a cake,” he added as he smiled at me. Itinaas niya ang dala niyang paperbag.

I scoffed, turned my back. Hinayaan ko siyang makapasok sa loob.

“How did you know I was here?” tanong ko.

“Amalia told me.”

“How long are you planning to stay here for your business?” I asked, emphasizing the last word.

He chuckled. “One week.”

Sinundan niya ako hanggang kusina.

“So, mauuna kaming umuwi?”

“How is my favorite nephew?” he smirked.

Kyel gave him a disgruntled glance and spoke, “Goed.”

“What kind of look is that? Heb je mij niet gemist?” Lucas asked. He was asking if Kyel did not miss him.

“No. It should be just me and Ma. Why are you here?” simangot ng Bata.

“Kyllian, that is not nice,” paalala ko sa kaniya. “Say sorry to your uncle.”
