KABANATA XXXI

[JIRSTEN MYLES]

“What are you doing here?” malamig niyang tanong.

He opened the kit and took cotton buds. He poured the betadine on it before applying it to my palm.

“K-Kaya ko na,” naiilang na saad ko. Akmang aagawin sa kaniya ang hawak niya nang sumama ang tingin niya sa akin. Muli akong nanahimik.

“You’re not here to beg me to help the Chavez, aren’t you?” panimula niya.

Napaawang ang labi ko. “H-How did you know?”

“You look desperate. You wonʼt even glance at me if it isnʼt for him.”

My lips parted as my eyes went to my palm. “You don’t have to do that–”

“Shut up if you don’t want me to kick you out of this building,” banta niya.

I quickly zipped my mouth and didnʼt speak again. I didnʼt do anything but watch him treat the scratches on my palm and elbow. When he finished band-aiding those with minor wounds, he stood up. The first aid kits were taken by him and returned to where he had taken them.

He rested his hands on sofaʼs lawson arms.

“Spill,” tipid na aniya.

“I am accepting your offer. As long as you help the Chavez Corp,” I bravely spouted.

He raised a brow. He stood up and walked toward the bar to get some wine.

“It doesnʼt work that way, Luna.”

Luna? Is that one of their terms in their language?

“Please,” I begged.

He poured the wine on the glass and took a sip before he faced me.

“And why would I?” tanong niya. “They won’t benefit me.”

“Please...”

Sumeryoso ang mukha niya. He leaned against the bar as he crossed his arms over his chest.

“Why are you doing this?” malamig niyang tanong.

“I have a huge debt to them. We are the reason why they are now in a mess–”

“Oh, come on, the Chavez would not be known to be one of the richest in the country If they had gone bankrupt for merely a hundred million,” natatawang aniya.

“Seems like you donʼt know anything about business at all.”

Hindi naman ako nakapagsalita. He was right, I knew nothing about business.

“Oliver Chavez embezzled more than a billion in their company. That hundred million was just a trigger to show his corruption.”

Napaawang ang labi ko sa sinabi niya.

“If you are worrying about that hundred million, I could just send it to them now,” dagdag pa niya.

Agad naman akong umiling sa kaniya.
