KABANATA XXXIII

[THIRD PERSON]

A few weeks before the engagement party, Owen felt so lost and numb inside his room. He didnʼt want Jirsten to see him that way, so he tried not to see her for the past days. He felt betrayed by the first woman he loved, his mother.

Now, he was afraid to see Jirsten. What if his feelings changed once he saw her?

From Vanna:
: Owen, donʼt be fooled by that woman.
: Sheʼs cheating on you.
: I saw her a few times with a man.
: [Vanna sent photos.]
: See it yourself. She even spent a night with him.

Malaki ang tiwala niya kay Jirsten. He knew Vanna was obsessed with him since they were young. It was unofficial, but Vanna was supposed to be his fiancee after their graduation.

He recognized the man she was with. It was Lucas Janssen. He met him once when he tried to negotiate with him.

Lucas was the CEO of one of the largest construction companies in the Netherlands. He went to the Philippines to expand his business by investing.

Jirsten wasnʼt that kind of a woman. She was never like her mother.

“Mom,” he mumbled.

Agad niyang nakuha ang atensyon nito. She smiled at him, but she wasnʼt looking directly into his eyes.

“Son, is that you?” masayang saad ina. Yet, her face didnʼt look that good. Dark circles around her eyes were visible, her skin was pale and lost too much weight for the past months.

Owenʼs lips parted. No matter how he looked at it, she wasnʼt staring at him.

His mother was getting worse day by day while they were postponing her surgery.

“Iʼm sorry,” she mumbled. “Iʼm sorry, son.”

She cried as she tried to embrace the child she barely knew. She realized how much she became selfish which caused her son to suffer.

Owen pulled away and held his motherʼs face.

“Canʼt we just go abroad? M-Mom, you might get better there kung magpapa-opera ka,” pagsusumamo niya.

“I donʼt want to die in a foreign place, Owen.”

Sunod-sunod namang umiling si Owen.
