WELCOME TO HAWKINS

THATS WHAT THE SIGN SAID. Welcome to Hawkins. As if anyone would be happy to move here. She could only read it for about a second before it was gone due to the speed the car was moving at. Billy, Lila and Max sat at the back of the car, uncomfortably, while Neil drove and Susan sat in the passenger seat.

While Max was staring at the fast-passing scenery, Lila was staring off into the distance through the windshield, a perk of being sat in the middle seat. She had nothing better to do, obviously. She didn't feel like making a conversation with Max, her slightly younger step-sister, emphasis on the step.

Obviously, having a conversation with her father and step-mother was not an option. Any time she had previously tried to, it would always turn into an argument or a lecture of some sort. Privileges of being a middle child.

One of them, was that as not being the youngest, her parents took out their anger on either her or Billy. It was a cause of why she would seem so cold-hearted to people she didn't know.

She was drawn out of her thoughts as the car pulled down to a stop. Max got out of the car on one side, before she followed. Glancing up at the house, she took in its features. However, she was not allowed to admire it for long as she was forced to carry some of her boxes to her new room.

"At least I don't have to share it with anyone." She muttered under her breath, opening the door. It was small, yet some of the things had already been placed. Letting down her box, she rubbed her red hands briefly. The bed, unmade, by the window which had a white lace hanging down from it.

A knock sounded at her door, and Max walked in. Lila had just moved her box from the floor to her bed, and without bothering to look back at her, she spoke, "What do you want, Max?" She could tell it was her because she was the only one out of the four who bothered to knock.

"Do you want to go the arcade?" Max asked. She would never verbally admit it, but she didn't really dislike going to arcades. In fact, she actually had a small like for them that was slowly growing. Plus, she wanted to see if this town had an arcade like the one they used to play at in California. Spending the day before school sorting out her room didn't seem like an ideal day.

"Sure, let's go." The duo walked out of her bedroom, past the living room where Susan was.

"We're going to the arcade, we'll be back later." She didn't leave any room for reply from Susan, as she closed the door behind them.

While walking there, the stench of cow manure filled her nose. She crinkled her nose at this, "Oh my gosh Max, you smell that?" There was a slight anger to her voice that alerted her.

"Yeah, I smell it." She replied.

Lila decided on not blaming Max for everything this once, as she didn't need more things to ruin her day. Or, she wasn't going to until she heard her muttering something lowly.

"What was that?"

"Nothing." She responded quietly.

"You said it once, you can say it again. Louder." Lila was rapidly getting aggravated at this. Max didn't reply for a while. "You're not gonna say anything, Maxine?" She knew calling her by her full name was a sensitive spot.

"Don't-" She knew she had fallen for Lila's trap. "What I said was, it probably smells like half the middle school kids." During her reply, she had hesitated.

"You're lying, Max." She crossed her arms, "And that's the reason we're here."

Deeping further into her speech was not allowed as they had finally reached the arcade.

Max swung open the door and headed straight for Dig Dug, while Lila went for Centipede. It was fun, going to the arcade. It was one of the only times she could take her mind off everything happening around her and actually focus on one thing; the game itself.

After a while, they had switched, attempting to surpass their best scores they had achieved back in California. Dig Dug was the game she was better at, obviously.

By the end of the evening, the moon was soon to come up and they had agreed on going back home for the night. Lila had scored 751,200 points on Dig Dug, ranking second, as Max had gained one hundred more than her, ranking first. She had entered her name into the machine as 'REDLILS'.

For some reason, she had always associated her name with the colour red. It felt fitting to her.

On the way home, stars started to litter the sky. It was a dazzling sight to her, as Max was busy attempting skateboard tricks before they got home.

When they did, the house was pretty silent. Susan and Neil were facing away from them, unaware of their presence. Lila placed a hand on Max's shoulder, causing her to look at Lila with a confused expression.

Lila, however, only used her free hand to place a finger on her lips, signalling Max to be silent. They both knew that if they were caught out this late, that it would not end well, especially by Neil.

They walked towards their rooms silently, Max successfully entering hers without a sound. Lila, however, made a wrong move, stepping on an unfamiliar creaking tile. She paused, silently holding her breath, waiting for a reaction, one which didn't come.

The sound of the 22-inch tv managed to conceal the sound of the floor, letting her slip into her room unknown. Once she was in, she let out a small breath she had been holding in, before continuing to fix her room. After putting everything in their respective places, she laid down on her bed, facing the dimly-lit lantern that illuminated a small area around it, unknowing of the four boys who discovered her second-place score.

"You're not nimble enough. But you'll get there one day. Until then, Princess Daphne is still mine." Lucas teased the curly-haired boy.

"Whatever. I'm still tops on Centipede and Dig Dug." He replied, unknowingly.

"You sure about that?"  A new voice entered. They turned around to face Keith, the worker. His hand was coated in an orange color as he ate out of the bag.

Doubts started to fill Dustin's mind. "Sure about what?" Mike, Will, and Lucas ran over to the scores with him to find two people overtaking his top score. They went wide-eyed at the scores.

"751,300 points? 751,200?" Will chimed.

"That's impossible." Mike stated in disbelief.

"Who is Mad Max and Red Lils?"

"Better than you." Keith responded, fully knowing who they were, but keeping his mouth shut.

"Is it you?"

"You know I despise Dig Dug." he curled his lip through his statement. They attempted to find out who, yet that didn't work as Keith kept his secrets.
