THE POLLYWOG
"I STILL DON'T GET WHY THEY CALL HIM ZOMBIE BOY. I mean, I get it. He got lost in the woods for a week or something, but why is he a zombie? Because everyone thought he was dead?" Max asked, narrowing her eyes.
"Yeah, I mean we had a funeral for him and everything." Lucas answered.
"After a week?" Lila questioned.
"Well, see, some other kid drowned at the quarry. We thought it was Will because his body was super decomposed." He explained, holding his lips in a tight line.
"What? Okay, that's not funny." Max stopped him, creasing her brows, causing Lila to stop too.
"It's not a joke, all right? It's public knowledge. You can ask anybody. Except Will, because he is really sensitive about it. All right?" Lila's watchful gaze burned into Lucas' back.
"The case of Phineas Gage is one of the great medical curiosities of all time. Phineas was a railroad worker in 1848 who had a nightmarish accident. A large iron rod was driven completely through his head. Phineas miraculously survived. He seemed fine." Lila started zoning out, wanting to be listening to anything but Mr Clarke's enthusiastic voice early in the morning. She instead wondered how far she could get on Dig Dug the next time she went to the arcade.
Suddenly, the door burst open to reveal Dustin, out of breath. It seemed as if he had ran all the way to class, in a failed attempt to not be late to school. "I am so sorry, Mr. Clarke. Really, I'm so sorry. Please continue with the class. Don't mind me." He sat down and whispered something to his other friends.
" Although it wasn't a crowbar, it was a rod, as I said."
Dustin whisper-yelled at Max, then pointed to Lila.
"Dustin!" Mr Clarke called.
He quickly turned back around, "Yes my lord?"
"Would you care to join the class now?"
"Please, yes."
"The case of Phineas Gage."
"Phineas Gage."
"Page 104."
"104. 104."
"Focus."
"Focusing. Focusing." Dustin turned around to whisper something at Max, and she gave him a thumbs up. Lila noticed Dustin's bag moving on it's own accord slightly, yet she thought that she may have been seeing things from staying up so late last night. She was drawn out of her thoughts when a scrunched up paper landed on her desk.
