❝i hate the beach but i stand

in california with my toes in the sand❞

-sweater weather, the neighbourhood

BUT THEN, EL LANDED. ON A BEACH. When she did, everything felt distorted. Voices too. That's because she hadn't adjusted yet. The waves parted where she had landed, as to make way.

She got up, looking around as she breathed heavily, trying to take in her new choice of landing. To one side of her, there were birds squawking as they flew off into the clouds. Eleven did a full three sixty, to make sure that there were no surprises. Her legs made indents in the sand as she moved.

Mike's voice echoed faintly. "El, are you okay?"

El sighed, as she was okay. "I'm okay." She said softly. "I'm... on a beach."

"Okay, I may be dense, but the last time I checked, there weren't any beaches in Hawkins."

"What else do you see?"

She saw a woman, who ran her fingers through her hair. She was also holding a yellow hat as her white dress flew in the wind.

"A woman. She's... pretty." El stared at her she observed her, "I think she's looking at me."

"Woo! Yeah!" The woman clapped as her sandals hung from her fingers.

A boy ran past her, looking down for a second at someone as he did so. The boy had red shorts on, and a yellow and red surfing board. He put it down, running towards the woman.

"There's... a boy." She continued.

"Did you see that?" He asked, his voice full of positive emotions. One that he no longer had.

The woman put her hand around the back of his head, "Yeah I saw that!" She kissed his forehead.

"That was at least seven feet!" He announced proudly, before turning to a little girl he had not yet noticed, who was crawling in the sand towards the water. "Sis, you see that!" The little girl stayed focused on the water, though.

She was putting something in it, yet El couldn't see it properly, so she found herself approaching closer. "There's a girl. The boys'... sis." As the girl walked around the younger one, it was a paper boat. The two watched as it fought to stay afloat, and it sunk slightly before Lila left it on it's own. She pushed it out, watching as it slowly floated away. She turned around after watching it glide on the water that washed ashore.

"T- Ten?" She asked, it was more time, she wanted. "More?"

Lila's mother walked towards her, an unreadable look on her face as she kissed the back of her daughter's head. "Yeah, okay, ten more minutes." Behind them, her brother ran to pick up his board so he could surf again. "But any longer than that and dad's going to be mad, okay?"

"Okay!" The two children said, their voices echoing in El's ears.

Billy ran to pick up his board, and as he did, his mother called for him. "Billy? Watch out for rip currents!" He nodded his head, and ran off to surf again. Wile he did, the woman turned to her daughter. "Lila, stay here with me, okay?"

The young child nodded her head, as she clung onto her mothers leg with one arm.

"It's Lila." El informed the group.

Meanwhile, Max stared at the wood desk that was in front of her. "It's California. It's a memory."

The sound of distant rumbling caught Eleven's attention, making her direct her vision elsewhere. "I think I see it. The source." In the void, she panted as she prepared to walk through the storm, to find what lay beyond it.

Thunder rumbled and crashed as the girl in a yellow and black top approached the cloud. It was smoking with a red mist, and above it, lightning struck, and lit up the greying clouds with rain that would never fall.
