WITHIN THE NEXT COUPLE OF HOURS, THEIR PATH HAD LED THEM TO DOING SOMETHING LILA WOULDN'T HAVE IMAGINED DOING WITHIN A HUNDRED YEARS. It seemed as the hundred years had passed with the ticking of a clock. The clock ticked in the background of a certain target's head, ready to amplify when the controller knew Max Mayfield had put the pieces together. But she hadn't yet. So the ticking was quiet enough to be heard if she focused on it, simultaneously way too easy to miss.
Waiting in the dark while Max fumbled with the keys to unlock the main entrance of Hawkins High was more nerve-wracking than the actual task they'd led themselves to do. Hairs on the back of Lila's neck had stood up since the conversation in the car, and not let them back down. She was constantly on-edge. Although it was unlikely, being flayed again was something she would not love to endure. So, standing outside while darkness loomed over Hawkins mad her have the feeling that someone was watching her, waiting in nearby bushes, ready to jump out at any given chance where she was turned away. But it never happened.
The moment a click sounded and Max pushed the door open, Lila released an audible breath. It was louder than she expected it to be, since she briefly glanced back at her with a questioning look when she did. Anticipation of getting in and retrieving very personal files had everyone in a chokehold; no reaction was made, unusually.
Within seconds, they'd all filtered in, walking with a picked up pace along the familiar hallways. Their flashlights shone, light bouncing off walls just to guide their path. All four of them walked side-by-side, two knowing where exactly they were headed and the other two having a brief idea. Lila flinched when Robin's voice came through Dustin's walkie talkie. Since he had been awaiting their results, it was already in his hand. "Dustin, do you copy?"
"Yeah, I copy."
Robin began to explain what had happened. "So, Nancy's a genius. Vecna's first victims date all the way back to 1959. Her shot in the dark was a bullseye."
Dustin's loud tone compared to the silence of the hallway contrasted greatly. "Okay, that's totally bonkers, but I really can't talk right now," he said.
"Wait, what are you doing?"
"Breaking and entering in the school to retrieve some confidential and extremely personal files."
"Can you repeat that?" Robin asked, probably missing half of his big words.
They turned a corner, closer to where the room was. "Just get your ass over here, stat," he demanded. "We'll explain everything."
