THE RAIN THREATENED TO OVERFILL HAWKINS COMMUNITY POOL AS KIDS GIGGLED, UNAWARE OF THE LOOMING DANGER. It fell down, making the same sounds as people's slippers and bare feet hitting the ground as they aimed for shelter.

The thunder also rumbled, adding to the mix of sounds that was becoming overbearing for Lila to hear. Had it been sunny, the conditions for her would be much worse.

Despite the other kids, teens and adults being wet from the rain, she wasn't. She rather had droplets of sweat on her forehead from the heat of her emerald green rain jacket. Though, nobody could tell the difference but her.

Lila pulled her hood down as she got off her bike. So did the other two, as they got off Max's. They left it by a hanging American flag, before walking towards the reception.

"Excuse me." Max hurriedly spoke. The manager, who's arm was resting on another girl's leg. She had seen her before, with Billy, but she didn't bother remembering her name. On the other hand, she slightly wished she did when the girl threw her a quick smile which she returned, but hers was less bright than the other girl's.

"No one in the water until 30 minutes after the last strike. And don't try and argue with me. You wanna get electrocuted go climb a tree." He said, as if he had been asked when the pool would open again thousands of times.

"Yeah, we don't care. We're not here to swim. Or get electrocuted." Max rushed out, leaning over the counter impatiently.

El pulled out the lifeguard bag. "We found this." The manager looked up, and the girl took a sip from her can.

"Does that belong to anybody here?" Max asked.

Lila could have told them earlier that it was Heathers, but she didn't, and did not know why either.

"Oh yeah. That's Heather's. I'll get it back to her." He informed them.

"We could give it back to her." El suggested.

"You could. Except she's not here. Bailed on me today."

"I could just give it to my brother to give it to her." Lila told him.

"He bailed too." The three girls shared a glance, but Lila's was slightly pale.

Lila put her arms on the counter, "Do you think she's missing, or anything?"
