LILA HARGROVE HAD BEEN THINKING. Thinking about what? Everything. Even though it was quite pathetic and time-wasting, it sure helped chemistry pass faster. Yet once she started, she couldn't stop. Ever since earlier, the one question had been plaguing her mind: why would Max suddenly want to make amends with her? The two may not be sisters by law anymore, but that didn't erase how well they knew each other. Lila knew Max wasn't the type of person to do that, and neither was she.

Lunchtime passed in a quick blur, going the same it had like any other day, with a few differences. Except the basketball game which she was still debating if she were to attend (if Flynn did, then she probably would too), Friday was a copy of every other day. Instead of her picking at the school's food while he ranted, it was the opposite. Flynn Hale was quite a good listener, but a worse advice-giver.

When she'd spilled her thoughts to him, Flynn's initial advice was to kidnap Max. Lila knew for obvious reasons she couldn't do it (not that she hadn't before). He then said to question her, but his mind was always off the tracks. Lila personally believed — and so did many others — that Flynn Hale was quite the weird person, but that was not something one could come across often. Their friendship fit like a puzzle piece: a mysterious, airy-fairy boy, with a placid, foolhardy girl.

One thing about Flynn though, was that once he was latched onto a topic, he wouldn't let go until he was forcefully made to do so. Meaning he was hellbent on the idea of getting Lila to somehow question Max about why. His voice clearly carried over the chatter of the lunch hall while he finished up. Lila hadn't eaten. "I'm just saying, maybe it's not so bad, you know? You go up to her, have a nice little chat, then go whack around her head, tie her up, wake her up, then ask her. Everything will be fine if you just talk her through it!"

"Yeah, totally," she drawled, rolling her eyes. "Then she probably screams for help, someone comes, helps her and she labels me as someone who wanted to kill her for the rest of my life."

"Good one," he reluctantly admitted. "But you can still —"

Lila immediately shoved her palm in his face. "No! I don't want to hear it." She rose from her seat, him following, the two exiting the cafeteria after he discarded his tray. "Honestly, if you listened to yourself sometimes, a lot could be done."

"Excuse me?" He forged an offended look. "Are you calling me slow, because if you are, you can fu—"

She stopped in her tracks. "Oh no." Lila's heart dropped to her stomach. (She would later miss this being her biggest problem.) Turning her head, she met Flynn's confused brown eyes. "I completely forgot the history project in my bedroom."
