Dr. Collingwood rushed to the restroom and quickly splashed some water over her face, hoping that no one had seen her cry. She looked up into the mirror and her eyes lingered on the scar on her reflection for a moment. Then, for a single instant, it changed.
She saw a different woman that bore a startling resemblance to herself, around her age, but with longer hair tied back into a ponytail. The expression on the woman's face was fearful, but her eyes were glassy. There was a deep gouge in the side of the woman's face, right where her own scar was.
Dr. Collingwood stumbled back, nearly falling over, and the hallucination vanished. She buried her face in her hands, feeling tears running down her face again, and burst out of the restroom. She ran blindly, pushing past other staff, found a dark, empty room, and shut herself in. She collapsed onto the floor, slowly curling up into a forlorn little ball.
The heart-wrenching sadness, the stares from her peers, the numbing depression, the self-loathing, forcing herself to forget the incident, losing control and ripping her mother out of the carnival photo, everything from her mother's death came crashing back on her.
She wanted to disappear into the floor.
Why, why, why?!
