Ericka was the only joy in both their lives. She was growing so big, and by her first birthday she was walking and calling Daddy. Tanya tried to get her to say Mommy, but she wouldn't say it. It was all Daddy. Eric bonded with his daughter and came home on time in the evenings to see her before she went to bed. Tanya continued to give Eric the silent treatment, so there was very little conversation between them and that was killing him slowly.

She made sure she was not in the nursery when he was in there with Ericka. Tanya would read to Ericka and leave so Eric could give her her bottle and  tuck her in for the night. Becky kept telling Tanya that Ericka loved to see both her parents's  faces at the same time before she closed her eyes and went off to sleep. Tanya didn't care to be in the same room as him.

The first time Eric heard the baby said Daddy, he felt like he would just explode with happiness. It was Ericka's first birthday and her mother had her all dressed up and waiting for her father to come home to celebrate. Ericka was in the play room sitting in her playpen. Eric and Lloyd walked into the kitchen with a huge package that took both of them to carry.  Tanya wondered what in hell that was.  He was always bringing home gifts for Ericka.  He put down the package  then headed toward the family room to see Ericka as always when he got home from work. Ericka saw him and quickly pulled herself up to a standing position; she got all excited and screamed  out, "Daddy! Daddy!"

Eric picked her up and threw her in the air and placed a big kiss on her forehead as she landed in his arms. Ericka loved being thrown up in the air. She giggled as Eric continued to throw her in the air not minding all her drool falling in his face.

"How is my birthday girl?" Eric asked.

"Come on Princess, say Daddy again," he begged. But she wouldn't say it.

Eric turned to Tanya and Becky.  "Did you hear her say Daddy?"

Tanya turned her back to him and totally ignored him. Becky was kinder. She told him that she heard nothing.  Lloyd was sitting at the counter drinking a beer.   "I guess you didn't hear either?"  Eric asked.  Lloyd caught on to what Tanya and Becky was doing and shrugged his shoulders.   Eric wondered how he was the only one who heard Ericka say Daddy. Tanya winked at Becky as they gathered around to sing happy birthday to Ericka.  What he would not hear from Tanya or Becky was that Ericka said "Daddy" all day long.

They all clapped as Ericka tore into the wrappings of the huge package to reveal the biggest doll house they had ever seen.  Tanya looked at Eric.  She didn't think that Ericka, at only a year old was ready for such a gift.  "Only the biggest and best for my little princess," Eric  said.

The  fall following Ericka's first birthday, Tanya went  back to work.  Eric  insisted that she stayed home with Ericka but she listened to nothing  he said anymore.  They were at war and she did the opposite of everything  he said just  to piss him off.

Going back to work  was not just about going against Eric's wishes, Tanya loved teaching and needed to get out of the house.  It was her way of giving back to the community.  She was excited to teach grade two, because she was reunited with the kids she taught in grade A, before she left on maternity leave.  She did not work far from home, and often went home at lunch time to see Ericka.

Despite how Eric  felt about her returning to work, he and Ericka accompanied Tanya  to the school on her  second  day back at work, so she could show off  Ericka to her students.  All the women teachers, old and young gathered around to stare at Eric and whispered how smoking hot he was.  Most of the people she worked with probably wondered about her relationship with Eric because they had never seen them together  at any of the school functions.
