Eric was like a tormented soul. He just had to know where Tanya was at all times. He was so afraid that he would come home one day and found that she  had left him. He was in the car waiting to drive her to the school where she did her internship as he did every morning.  This was their daily  ritual.  Spending twenty minutes in the car each morning   was the closest they got to each other.  This was their new normal.

He got out of the car and went back inside to see what was keeping her.  Tanya  was sitting out on the patio drinking tea and reading the morning paper with all four dogs surrounding her. The dogs were very protective of her. Apart from Eric, no one could get close to Tanya when the dogs were around. They were his dogs but they had no use for him since they got to know Tanya.  She treated them as if they were people.

"What's up?" Eric asked. She shrugged her shoulders and kept her head in the paper.

"Well are you going to school?" he asked. She quickly put the paper down.

"Oh shit Eric I totally forgot to tell you," she said gazing up at him.

"Tell me what?" he asked.

"There is no school today; school is out today," she said. Eric  looked at her suspiciously.

"And you didn't think to tell me this; you had my ass out there waiting for you?" he asked.

"I am sorry; I forgot," she said and bit under one side of her bottom lip and looked at him with those big wide innocent eyes which totally left him weak and vulnerable. Another time he would take off too and they would end up in bed then maybe go swimming. For a moment he was lost in his head thinking about them. He stood there staring at her.

"What?" Tanya asked. She couldn't tell if he was mad at her.

"Nothing...look it is ok; see you later," he said and took off.

But Eric could not keep his mind on work; he was so afraid that she was up to something and would leave him. By noon he called it a day and headed home. He headed to the kitchen but she was not there and so he headed to her bedroom.  He could hear the shower going so he headed back out. He treated her as if she was a total stranger to him, almost as if she was nonexistent, yet she could not make a move without him knowing.

He kept close enough to her to know what was going on but far enough so there was no intimacy between them. He was punishing her with the no touching, no feelings and no talking strategy.  He knew it was hard on her especially since she was estranged from her family but he wanted to hurt her as much as she had hurt him. His biggest fear was that he would come home one day and found that Tanya had left him.   And Luke, the bastard was never far from his thoughts. His mother was not joking, the fucking bastard filed a complaint against him in the US, the UK and on the island. So he had no choice but to back off from putting a hurt on him. Maybe the fucker will just go missing mob style, Eric thought.

Eric grabbed a few beers sat on the back steps and drank them, one after the other. He lost count of how many he gulped down. He thought about their life; he recalled how they used to swim together. It was something they looked forward to whenever they were home. He had a lot of fun making love to her in the water and on the sand as the sun set. He missed that. He missed his Tanya....the Tanya who left for New York and never came back. He still was not sure who came back. He felt horney as hell. It had been a while since he made love.....since he touched his wife. He knew that Tanya thought that he was out there fucking the world to get even with her, but he hadn't.  He was too distraught  to even look at another woman.
