The very next morning, just before school, Angie and I sat on the benches out the front of the school. She was engrossed in another book, while I spent some time on my phone. I looked at her every now and again. I noticed that her hair was now clean and soft, the big curls falling in tiny, perfect ringlets. Her skin looked clear... except for a large, but ever so slight graze on her left cheek. It made her look rough, but tough. I noticed, as well, that she was wearing the same torn and stained jeans, the same thick jacket, and the same dusty Converse sneakers.
When the bell rang, we stepped up together to go to class. Angie looked at me, eyebrows raised. "You're looking at me weirdly," she gave a breathy laugh, "is there something on my face?"
"Oh, yeah, there's a..." I murmured, pointing to a cheek.
"Oh, the graze?" She touched it gently with her fingers. "That's nothing. I have, like, big concrete stairs out the back of my house. I'm surprised it wasn't worse than that."
And with that, she waved goodbye and headed off to start the day.
It sounded convincing enough, but I didn't quite know what to think.

Myself, Angie, and Kitty waited in the courtyard for the rest of our friends to arrive. Kitty was chewing gum and tapping her long, manicured nails on her phone, whereas Angie was anxiously bouncing both legs up and down.
Jake and Joe arrived minutes later, lugging a giant speaker with them.
Unique strutted over to us, plugged her iPod into the speaker, and gave it a hearty pat. "Alright, ladies, we ready?"
"Oh, God," Angie said, resting her hands on her tummy, "I really don't think I can do it."
Jake, eliciting an annoyed sigh, stepped in front of us. "I'll just do it, okay?"
And with that, Jake did a sharp spin around and begun to dance to the funky music.
Jake:
Oh, I just wanna take you anywhere that you like
We could go out any day, any night
Baby I'll take you there, take you there
Baby I'll take you there, yeahUs girls all ran down the steps of the courtyard, dancing in and around the metal tables.
The reception was, again, not what we had hoped; they weren't enjoying it at all.
Oh, tell me tell me tell me how to turn your love on
You can get, get anything that you want
Baby just shout it out, shout it out
Baby just shout it out, yeahAnd if you,
You want me too
Let's make a move
Yeah, so tell me girl if every time weAll:
To-o-uch
You get this kind of ru-u-ush
Baby, say yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
If you don't wanna take it slow
And you just wanna take me home
Baby, say yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeahJake:
And let me kiss youJake:
Oh, baby, baby, don't you know you got what I need
Looking so good from your head to your feet
Come on come over here, over here
Come on come over here, yeah
Oh, I just wanna show you off to all of my friends
Making them drool down their chinny-chin-chins
Baby, be mine tonight, mine tonight
Baby, be mine tonight, yeahAnd if you,
You want me too
Let's make a move
Yeah, so tell me girl if every time weAll (Jake):
To-o-uch
You get this kind of ru-u-ush
Baby, say yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
If you don't wanna take it slow (c'mon)
And you just wanna take me home
Baby, say yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
