a/n: this is kind of a prequel to "studying" so you have more of a background on that story, i guess.

"hey, y/n! how are you today?" josh said, running towards me. i gave a small smile. i never understood why this sweet boy was so kind to me. everyone else hated or ignored me. granted, i was a bitch to everyone else. but josh was different. i didn't want to be mean to him.

"um, hey! i'm okay, just hanging in there. how about you, are any of those assholes being mean today?" i replied. he simply shrugged. although josh was sweet and had many friends, the "popular" people weren't exactly friendly. it pissed me off to the core.

"i just ignore them. they'll stop eventually." he told me. i shook my head.

"no, josh. next time i find out they do or say something bad, i'll kill them."

"..it's fine. don't worry."

"josh."

he stopped walking and looked at me. i stopped too.

"why do you care so much about them being mean to me?" josh asked me.

"why do you care so much about me when i'm so mean?" i shot back. he immediately shook his head.

"no, not this again. you're not mean, you just have a lot going on. i would never not be your friend because you weren't the epitome of kindness. i mean, i kinda like your edge."

i slightly cringed at the word "friend". one of the reasons i cared so much for him, was because i had feelings for him. how could i not? he was one of the only people who cared about me.

as i was about to speak, i saw the kids that were bothering josh staring at him and whispering. i gave them a dirty look and spoke up.

"got something to say, assholes? or are you too busy blowing each other to speak the fuck up?" i spit. they walked away and i turned to josh again.

"please tell me if they bother you again. okay, josh?" i said. he nodded.

"okay, y/n. also..why don't you sit with tyler, mark, and i during lunch? or do you sit with someone else?" he offered. i smiled.

"usually i ditch for a half hour to grab subway but..are you sure they'll be okay with me sitting with you guys?"

"yes. i mean, i kinda call the shots when it comes to my friend group, but they'll realize how nice you actually are."

"o-okay." i agreed, surprised that i'd have another chance to try and make a couple more friends at least. "i'll sit with you guys."

"perfect! now, let's head to algebra."

a week later

it was already third period and i hadn't seen josh. it was strange. tyler told me josh was in fact at school that day, but for some reason i hadn't seen him once.

was he avoiding me?

my stomach twisted at the thought. of course. josh realized how messed up of a person i was, but was too sweet to tell me he didn't want to be friends anymore. i knew it was too good to be true. nobody ever stuck around.

as i was walking to fourth period, i bumped into someone. their hood came down and i realized it was josh.

"josh! where have you- what happened to you?" i was about to ask where he was but i noticed his black eye and cut forehead.
