"i'm gonna go to the ice cream shop by the volleyball net. need anything?" i asked my husband, tyler. we were at the beach, enjoying our time home in columbus before we had to go back on tour. he shook his head.

"nah. i don't really want ice cream. but you should get some, it's really hot out here. " he told me. i nodded.

"okay, ty. i'll be back."

i quickly walked across the sand, not enjoying how it burned my feet. it was nearing the end of august and starting in september, tyler, josh, debby, and i would be on tour again. tyler and i didn't get much alone time during tour, so we always spent as much time just the two of us when we weren't on tour.

i walked into the ice cream shop and stood in line. there was a man watching me and i was slightly uncomfortable under his gaze. he had to be about 6 feet tall. and he was a bit older than i.

"what can i get you?" asked a teen that was working the ice cream shop.

"could i get a small mint chip on a cone?" i requested. she wrote my order down and looked back up at me.

"would that be all?" she asked.

"yes."

"that'll be $2.42"

i gave the girl three dollars and she gave me 18 cents in return. five minutes later, she handed me my cone and i began to walk back to tyler. when i was almost to him, however, i felt a pair of arms around my waist.

"hello, beautiful. nice body." it was the man from earlier. i cringed underneath his arms. his breath reeked of alcohol and his eyes were bloodshot.

"leave me alone." i said, clearly. except he didn't let me go.

"you're a fiesty one. reminds me of my ex wife. say, i think i could make you my new one." he slurred. i fought his strong embrace.

"leave me alone!!" i screamed. just then, the man was pushed away and i was out of his rough embrace.

in front of me, i saw tyler attempting to attack the man, who happened to be much bigger than him. tyler got a few punches in, due to the other man's intoxication, but eventually the man pinned tyler, punching him relentlessly.

"stop it! enough!" i yelled. eventually, two other guys pulled the man off tyler even though they tried to continue the fight.

i ran up to tyler, who had a gushing bloody nose that was dripping onto his bare chest and a black eye.

"oh, baby, no no no." i said, nursing to his side. "does someone have a first aid kit? please?"

thankfully, i knew what i was doing. i had been a high school nurse at that time, so i knew a thing or two when it came to the aftermath of fights.

someone handed me a first aid kit and i cleaned up tyler's bloody nose. i then asked someone if they could get him ice. they did, and i made tyler hold it to his eye. he didn't say many words to me after the fight.

eventually, we were cleaning up the stuff to go home because we were advised to leave the beach for the rest of the day. meanwhile, the man who assaulted me was banned from it completely.

"why did you do that, ty? i appreciate you so much, but i could have handled myself." i asked my husband.

"whether you could handle yourself or not, i wasn't just going to watch him get into your face while you cringed beneath him." tyler replied. he then took the hand i wasn't using to drive, in his. "i wasn't kidding when i told you i would step to a dude much bigger than me."

i smiled and shook my head as i thought about the song tyler wrote about me, three years prior. he had such a way with his words. it was one of the many reasons i married him.

"you gotta be more careful, ty. he could have hurt you a lot more than he did."

"it wouldn't have mattered as long as you were alright. you're my main priority, y/n."

"i love you, tyler. so much."

"i love you too, y/n. if anything like that ever happens again i won't be afraid to beat up another dude. even if this guy is 7 feet tall and not 6." tyler told me. "but for now, can we just get ice cream? since you dropped yours on the beach."

"yeah. we can get ice cream now."
