tw: angst, unfair parenting, language"y/n, get up." i woke up to my mother shaking me rapidly. i shot up and rubbed my face.
"get ready, and look presentable. we're having a barbecue with dad's friend from work and his family." my mom told me. i nodded, rubbing my eyes.
"and you're telling me now?" i complained.
"watch yourself. if you mess this up, you're grounded. just don't make any conversation and stay out of the way."
"i always stay out of the way. can't do anything to make dayna look bad."
my mother rolled her eyes and walked away. i sighed sadly, and got out of bed. things had always been this way. i was just used to it.
as far as anyone was concerned i was just the other sister. the one my parents didn't talk about much. the hated one. my parents were so hard on me and i never understood why.
maybe it was because i wasn't a basic bitch like my twin sister dayna. dayna was perfect. she had good grades, a boyfriend, and was captain of the volleyball team. she had tons of friends and liked to shove it in my face.
but i was different. i didn't care about school and loved art and music. i had a small (large) obsession with dying my hair and only had three close friends. i was quieter than dayna and liked to be alone.
i guess you could see why my parents favored dayna. i just didn't understand why they treated me like cinderella pre-meeting prince charming.
i made my bed and got dressed. i pulled on a black t-shirt and ripped jean shorts. i knew my parents would comment something on my outfit choice but i wouldn't really care. i would be able to deal with it.
i grabbed my phone off my night stand and slid it in my back pocket. i pulled my converse on and walked downstairs.
"look who rose from her coffin." dayna said with a mean smirk. i rolled my eyes grabbing a banana.
"it's 11:30. why do you even need that much sleep?" she asked me.
"it's none of your business. shouldn't you be cheating on your boyfriend or something?" i replied. she gasped and threw the same fit she always did for the past 16 years whenever i offended her.
"mom! dad! y/n is being a bitch!" dayna cried out. i just shrugged.
"y/n watch yourself. leave your little sister alone." my dad said to me.
"she's literally two minutes younger than me. she's not that much younger than me." i defended myself. i hated when my parents called dayna my little sister. we were born in the same hour so how did that even make sense?
"and for the record, justin and i broke up. so it doesn't matter who i date now." dayna said to me. "but at least i'm pretty enough to get a boyfriend. you can barely talk to a guy."
i just looked down and tuned dayna out. she always used the fact that we were fraternal twins to point out that i was the ugly one. and my parents did nothing about it. but if the situation was reversed it would be hell on me.
"the joseph's will be here in a little while. y/n, get out the hotdog and hamburger buns." my mom called out to me. i walked up to the pantry and grabbed the buns and put them on the counter.
"dad said the joseph's have a son that's perfect for me. they said his name is zack and he's a year younger than us. i asked if there was an older brother because i don't really like dating younger but dad said that tyler is a total mental case." dayna told me. i raised an eyebrow wondering why she thought i cared.
