A/N : Been a little while since I've written anything for She Ra (turns out writing the same fandom every day for a month gets you kind of tired of it) but I am stressed as fuck and these two will forever be a comfort ship of mine so here we are. Takes place post canon because of course it does.
Catra was incredibly stressed.
With the war over, cleanup efforts took up everyone's time most days. Of course, things were way more peaceful now and no one had to legitimately worry about needing to fight on the front lines, but a combination of the constant cleanup and varying degrees of PTSD left everyone still feeling a bit on edge.
As far as trauma goes, while obviously it'd be unfair to compare people's traumas as though less trauma made your struggles less valid than that of someone with more, no one could deny that Catra and Adora had some of the worst of it. Both had grown up in the Horde and both had experienced some of the worst of what the war had to offer. It was a lot for two young adults to take, but they had each other at least.
One night, as the pair got ready for bed, Adora could tell that the hybrid seemed more on edge than usual. That particular day had been one in which they did cleanup in the Fright Zone, so it was understandably a stressful work day. Adora finished changing into her night clothes and then sat next to Catra on the edge of the bed.
"You seem stressed" the blonde observed gently, wrapping an arm around her girlfriend. "Yeah, you could say that" Catra mumbled in response, trying to ignore the growing tension throughout her entire body. "You gonna be okay?" Adora asked calmly, running a hand through the magicat's hair. Catra didn't answer that one.
"It's just..." she stopped as her voice broke. Of course, she knew that she was safe now. She could cry without risking Lonnie bullying her or Shadow Weaver hitting her for it, but that many years of abuse doesn't just go away after a few months of safety. "It's okay" Adora reassured. "You can cry. No one's gonna hurt you for it"
And like that, the damn broke.
It always seemed so fundamentally wrong to witness Catra crying. Not only did she hardly ever cry, but for Adora it also just hurt to see the person she was closest to reduced to a puddle of tears. However, despite the uneasy feeling that arose at the sight, Adora kept a caring face on and allowed the hybrid to curl up against her.
"It's okay" she whispered to the shaking figure in her arms as she felt her start to hyperventilate slightly. "Just breathe" the blonde continued calmly, stroking Catra's back in a soothing motion. "You're safe now. No one's gonna harm you. I love you"
"It... It's..." Catra attempted to speak, but the words got caught in her throat. "It's alright" Adora reassured soothingly. "You don't have to explain right now. Just work on your breathing like Perfuma taught us, okay?" she coaxed gently. Catra just swallowed and nodded, to which Adora took a deep breath in to guide her.
Soon enough, Catra began to calm down, exhaustion outweighing stress.
"You wanna talk about it now?" Adora asked after a moment. Catra took a deep breath and then nodded. Adora said nothing, allowing her girlfriend the space and time to speak her mind. Catra appreciated that. There were a lot of things she really hated, but one of the biggest was being talked over. Lord knows she dealt with that enough in her childhood.
"It's just..." she took another breath to stop herself from getting too worked up. "The cleanup has been a lot, and I hate cleaning. But it's not like I can ask for a break. After all, I caused most of this shit when I was being a dumbass out on the front lines and- and..."
"Breathe" Adora coaxed gently, seeing how the hybrid was growing tense once again. Catra nodded and took a breath. "Okay" she said with a big exhale. "I'm okay" she repeated. "It's just... A lot, you know?" Adora opened her mouth to respond, but was quickly cut off by a small "It was a rhetorical question"
"Those are a lot of feelings you've been dealing with" Adora said after an awkward silence. "Yeah" Catra replied with a small, exhausted chuckle. "Guess I'm more fucked up than we realized, huh?" she gave Adora a tired look. "We're all a little... Fucked up from the war" That made Catra laugh. Adora hardly ever cursed, so it was always amusing when she did.
"We can work through it though, right?" Catra asked, her voice smaller than Adora had ever heard it. "Yeah" the blonde reassured with a small smile as she lied down, the hybrid following that same motion. The two were curled up together in bed, just like they would do when they were little.
"We can work through it together"
