A/N : An extended version of the scene at the end of season 6 episode 2 when Alex got upset about not being able to save Kara yet
Kelly was in the other room when she heard a yell that was very decidedly that of Alex's followed by the sound of something small and heavy hitting a wall with a small thud. She walked out to see her girlfriend standing in the kitchen in front of a counter completely covered with Chinese food- Kara's favorite. Some stray noodles were still on the wall and underneath was the disheveled box making it very apparent what Alex had thrown.
"Alex?" Kelly asked, concerned as she slowly approached the woman. Alex said nothing for a moment, just shaking her head as she avoided Kelly's gaze. Eventually, she threw a half hearted hand up in the air. "I couldn't... I couldn't get her back. I c..." Alex stuttered out, trying to muster up the words she wanted to say. Kelly just stood there and listened, patient as ever. "I couldn't save her"
"Hey" Kelly said in a gentle tone as she walked up to the short haired girl, who only shot her a half hearted glance. "That's more than anyone could've pulled off in a day" she assured her, and it was true. What the team had all managed to accomplish within just that day all to try and save Kara was really impressive, even if it hadn't worked out in the end.
"It's not just today" Alex replied, shaking her head and finally making eye contact with her girlfriend. "I mean, what if we never- What..." she trailed off, and Kelly could almost see the gears turning in her head as every worst case scenario ran through her head. She had to bite back a comment about not catastrophizing because she knew that Alex was fully aware of that, and it would probably only make her feel guilty if she was told it.
"What if she's really gone?" Alex finally asked, gesturing with her hands a bit to emphasize her point. The thought terrified her. "I mean, how am I supposed to accept a world... Without Kara in it?"
"The only thing that you have to accept is that this could take a while" Kelly assured her, though she wasn't even entirely convinced herself. Alex smiled as though amused, though she looked more pained than anything. She couldn't believe this was all happening. Sure, this wasn't the first time that Kara had been in a tricky situation but they didn't even know what part of the Phantom Zone she was in. "But you are going to keep fighting and so is she"
"Yeah, but that's the thing" Alex replied, her voice more of a strained whisper as she fought to keep herself from crying. "I don't know if I can" she continued, once again using her hands to drive home her point. "This isn't just a hard path. I don't see any path... At all!" She sounded almost desperate at this point. "We're nowhere, Kelly. We are nowhere, and she is alone, and I might not ever see her again"
She was shaking at that point and all Kelly could think to do was to step forward and hug her, so that's exactly what she did.
"It'll be okay" Kelly said gently as she felt the woman cling to her like a lifeline. "You don't know that" Alex countered, her voice breaking as the dam finally began to break. It was almost amazing how she'd managed to keep mostly calm throughout all of this despite the fact that she was truly terrified. "I know that you'll pull through whatever ends up happening"
"Kelly, I can't... I don't know if- If-"
"Just breathe, love" Kelly said calmly, recognizing that her girlfriend was having an anxiety attack. Alex shakily took a breath to try and calm herself down as she continued to cling onto the other woman. "You're having an anxiety attack- Which is understandable considering everything happening- But I need you to realize that it's gonna be okay, whatever happens" Kelly soothed, just getting a small nod in response. "Do you want to sit down?"
"Please" Alex replied shakily, so Kelly slowly unwrapped her arms from her and led the both of them to the couch. Once seated, Alex leaned against her girlfriend and held one of her hands tightly as she attempted to calm her nerves. "You're okay" Kelly said quietly, giving the agent's hand a gentle squeeze. "It'll be okay. Just try and calm down"
It took a few minutes of gentle whispers of reassurance, but eventually Alex calmed down enough to where she could think properly. Kelly gave her a small smile which she shakily returned. "Sorry for, uh... That" Alex apologized with a small chuckle. "You don't have to apologize" Kelly assured her. "You already have anxiety- Which you handle pretty well- And this understandably made it worse. That's nothing to apologize for"
Alex just nodded in response before reaching over for the remote and flicking on the TV, turning it to some crime show. "Do you want to try and eat some of that food we bought?" Kelly asked her quietly after a moment. "Because there is a lot of it and it would be unfortunate for it to go to waste. Plus, I don't think either of us have had dinner yet"
"Yeah..." Alex replied with a sigh. "We should probably do that"
