Phil had lived his whole life with people seeing him different, whether it be pitying him for the downsides of his condition or treating him like an infant. No one ever seemed able to look past his height, or the way that he couldn't turn his neck. The nasally quality to his voice or the abnormal shape of his head. All of it added up to people seeing him as lesser than and treating him differently because of his disability. Hell, the reason he had even met Vivian in the first place was because Karen took pity on his less than ideal dating life. However, that had turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

Because Vivian was the first girl to ever treat him like an equal.

She was still perfectly aware of it, of course. She would have to be blind and deaf in order to not be. But she didn't treat him any differently because of it. Nor did she see him any differently than she would if he didn't have it. She was accommodating of anything he needed help with, but she didn't insert herself into a situation to help him when it wasn't needed. It was part of what Phil loved so much about her, even beyond actually liking her personality and the way she looked. He would do his hardest not to mess this up because he wasn't sure he'd ever meet someone like her again.

They were in bed together, him as the big spoon. That was rewarding enough in itself because he always wanted to be able to hold that kind of role in a relationship, but no one had ever let him due to his height (and because everyone else saw him as a child).

Vivian had been staying over with him more and more, to the point where even Karen was aware of it despite her generally not caring about his life or what happened in it. It was nice to have a person to fall asleep next to at night. A body apart from his own in the same bed as him. Not just a body, but a person. A person who saw him as an equal when everyone from his boss to his doctor treated him like a child who was set to die in a few weeks.

"I love you" she muttered to him, turning over so she could kiss him. Neither of them had dropped the L word yet, but it somehow felt so natural. A stark contrast to how it always played out in the films. Because they were made for each other. They loved each other.

"I love you too, Vivian"
