Chapter Thirty-Three: Cupcakes
Annabeth
I woke up happy the next day(a rare occasion), and I was able to sleep past three am, which made me even happier.
Around seven, I wandered onto the roof and sat with my legs dangling off the edge.
"Annabeth?" I turned around, seeing Annie and Rosie walking towards me.
"Hey, are you girls alright?" I asked.
"We got worried because there were a bunch of empty glasses and an empty bottle of whiskey on the counter." Annie answered.
My eyes widened, "Oh, nothing is wrong! There just wasn't much left in the bottle and it was taking up a lot of space." I hated lying to them, but I really didn't want them to worry. "Have you eaten breakfast?"
"No, but we have cake mix." Rosie grinned.
"You want cupcakes for breakfast?" I raised my right eyebrow.
"Yeah, pretty much,"
I sighed. "It's Saturday, and cupcakes are good, so that sounds great."
We walked down the stairs and began getting the ingredients out. "We have a lot of cake mix," said Annie. "Why don't we make them from scratch?"
"Sounds fun!" Rosie looked so happy, and so did Annie. I loved seeing them like this.
"Ok...I'm pretty sure that we need flour...and sugar...and baking soda...and butter."
"That's cookies, Annabeth. We need flavor and we need eggs, water and oil."
"That makes more sense." I chuckled.
Once everything was out on the counter, I noticed that Percy was still asleep. I didn't blame him, as he'd been working very long hours lately. We quickly stirred everything together and put the cupcakes in the oven. Admittedly, they were a bit of a strange color, but I'm sure they will turn out fine.
"Is dad still asleep? He's usually awake by now." Annie asked.
"I'm pretty sure. I'll go check on him, he never sleeps this long."
As I turned to go back to our bedroom, Percy walked in the door carrying a drink carrier with coffees and smoothies.
"Hi," he said, kicking off his shoes. "I got drinks."
"When did you get up?" Asked Rosie suspiciously.
"While you three were on the roof, I think." Percy handed me a warm coffee, then strawberry smoothies for each of the girls.
"Thanks, Perce." I quickly kissed him, then went to check on the cupcakes."When we put these in they were bright yellow, now they are orange. Also they are flat."
Annie came over to see, and she groaned. "We forgot the baking soda!"
"I'm sure they'll turn out fine," Rosie shrugged.
"Cupcakes for breakfast?" He raised an eyebrow, sipping on his coffee.
"Why not?" I asked.
"Nothing, just interesting."
"Annie, we didn't forget the baking soda, there is way too much." Rosie said flatly. The cupcakes were spilling over the edge.
"Oh shit shit shit," I pulled the cupcake tray out of the oven, but some hot batter spilled onto my hand, and I yelped. I dropped the pan in the sink and ran cool water over the burn, scowling. "Fucking cupcakes," I muttered. I'd never been a particularly good cook, no matter what I tried to make. Of course I could make basic things, such as tacos or pancakes, but baking from scratch was risky business.
