Chapter Forty-Two: Estelle's Home
Percy
After my meeting with some of the managers for the project in Crete, I decided to clock out early so I could go see my sister. After saying goodbye to Georgie, I drove up to Brooklyn.
While I waited through traffic, I thought about my life the past few years. For the last decade, I'd been on a rollercoaster of events. I'd been married and divorced twice by age twenty five. I had a daughter(soon to be two), and in December I would be getting married to the love of my life. I couldn't say I was nervous at first about the whole ordeal, considering how things had turned out in the past, but both Annabeth and I had grown so much in ways I couldn't explain. Especially her. Going through all she had, it changes you, but she'd turned it into something to build off. I admired her for that. I loved her for that.
Most of what I've become is thanks to the people around me. My mom, who is the best person to ever walk the earth. My fiancée, who is braver than anyone I've ever met. My daughter, who is my inspiration. My sister, who I can rely on always.
I was knocked out of my thoughts when I pulled into Estelle's driveway and almost ran into a grey Lexus. The very one that belonged to Ken.
"You've got to be shitting me." I mumbled as I stepped out of my vehicle. I saw my sister on the deck talking to Ken. She looked like she was about to lose it.
"You can't just go after people who ask you to leave them alone. That's fucking creepy!" Estelle screamed.
"She told me she'd sort out my job situation, and she hasn't yet." Ken replied.
"She said no such thing." I rolled my eyes.
"Oh, it's you. Sleeping with a new girl now?" He had the audacity to even think it.
Estelle's eyes widened, "He's my brother!"
"Leave my sister alone, Ken. You are being a perv." I motioned for Estelle to go inside, but she didn't budge.
"The job thing is your fault. Mostly. But seriously, leave all of us alone. Oh, and you can stop sending those sappy handwritten letters. Annabeth doesn't live here."
Ken narrowed his eyes, taking a step back. "I can assure you, my job is none of your concern. You could have just started with the fact she doesn't live here anymore. Jesus." He put his hands up and stormed off, but not before denting my Jeep.
"Bitch!" I yelled after him. "That was expensive."
Estelle opened the door and invited me inside. "Now that he's gone, come on in! I've been meaning to show you how I set up the place."
I stepped inside and noted the considerable difference from when I lived here to now. "It looks amazing, 'Stelle."
"Dad helped me build the table, it came out really cute. It's staying with me forever."
I laughed, glad she was happy. "The table is gorgeous. Do you need help with furniture or anything? Bills? Transportation?"
"No, I'm doing pretty well, actually. The ice cream parlor is closed for the season, so I got a job at the animal shelter. It's a lot of fun, and I get paid to play with the animals. Bills aren't so bad, especially with all the stimulus money going out. It helps, but it will run out eventually. My point is, I've got stuff covered!"
"I'm glad to hear it," I nodded. "You like the apartment and all?"
"I love it. I turned what used to be your room into an art studio, my room is in the basement. I put up a wall to separate my room from the rest of the space. It's way too big for me to have just one room. The landlord loved the idea, she said she'd been thinking about doing it for ages, and now she got someone to do it for her." Estelle danced around the living room. "By the way, Rachel stopped by the other day. She forgot what your new address was and was too embarrassed to call."
